Default Poker Tournaments in FL Shut Down?

2 places in Tampa, well 3 including the Indian Gaming Hard Rock Casino, run tournaments that I frequent, Derby Lane Dog Track and Tampa Bay Downs Horse Track. I went down to play the 150 person Saturday tourney at Derby Lane this past weekend (Silks isn't open until December) and was informed that ALL tournament play was shut down indefinitely by the Florida Division of Para-Mutuel Wagering.

I've placed calls and left messages over the past 3 days with the Wagering office but have yet to hear anything back about why and when....

Doesn ANYONE have any information about this, thanks!

And the REALLY odd item is that live cash games ($1/2) have been allowed to continue, it's ONLY tournaments that have been suspended....caca to say the least

This thread has a link to a newspaper article about the shutdown.

This blog has a discussion and an upcoming podcast about the shutdown with Derby Lane's media relations director,.

I would expect that Florida would continue to allow tournaments... but only if the total buyin is $2.00 or less.

If I understand correctly, there are two sets of legislation on the books in Florida regarding poker, the state law allowing the very limited form of poker we have, and administrative rules governing pari-mutuels in the state. It appears this was a change in the administrative rules which shut down the tournaments.

The Seminoles are governed by the state law as applied by the federal government, not the administrative rules. As a result, the Hard Rock in Tampa has about 20 tables running tournaments now, because of the massive influx of tournament players from the tracks.

I'm pretty sure when the Downs opens, they'll be cash games only, because of the rule. Which is sad.

I usually only play the end of the month $550 buy-in tourney due to the structure, almost EVERYTHING else Tampa Hard Rock runs is a freakin' crapshoot of a structure. I will be heading out there soon to check it out, SUCKS that we only have one outlet now!

I really liked the Silks card room, great players and great structure compared to Derby....but I'll be damned if I'll play $1/2 live ANYWHERE 'cept the net for obvious reasons....I'm listening to pcast link listed earlier in this thread and hopefully will clear things up but this is a sad day for FL and tournies.
