Default bankroll

I am thinking of going and playing B&M this weekend after being away from the game for about a month. Over the course of the previous month I was forced to use by poker bankroll to finance some unforeseen expenses. I have about $200 left.

I was frequently playing a number of games but mostly 5-10 kill or 1-2 NLH. Is it worth if for me to go and start playing 2-4 limit this weekend? The game can be ridiculous and filled with bad plays left and right. Should I just wait and rebuild my bankroll and then return and play my regular game?

Are we talking Foxwoods? Go have fun at the 2-4 game. Work on your agressive post-flop play, table selection and sunglasses preference (change every 30 minutes). Drag some monster pots and try to keep from laughing too much at the future poker stars of america .

This is my definition of a good game.

Anyway to answer your question . . . why do you play poker?

If you play poker to have a good time, the question is will you have a good time playing 2-4 with a $200 bankroll. If the answer is yes, then by all means you should go and play.

On the other hand, if your going to be miserable playing in that game, stay home.

If you play to make money, I think you should build your roll before you return to playing. Its tough to beat the rake on a $2-$4 game to begin with. Add the fact that the game often has wild play which creates a large variance which is never good for a small bankroll.

Arguably, I think you could say that the 2-4 variance is higher than 1-2 NL. It's true that in 2-4 you aren't going to lose $200 in one hand, but you can easily lost large chunks chasing draws, etc.

While one can easily lose $200 in NL on a bad beat (ex. AA getting cracked by KK or something like that), I think you have more control over your wins/losses. You definitely play less straight/flush draws that might cost you money. I've played 1-2 NL several times with a $200 buy in, and my friend has as well (he usually buys in for $150), and neither of us have ever gone broke in one playing session. Granted, my times in a brick & mortar casino is a small sample size. I just think if you are a tight player, that there is less variance in 1-2 NL than 2-4.

I love to start out a 24 hour session with
2/4! Don't play marginal hands OOP and
value bet/raise when you have the dominant
hand (we know that, right?) Value bet
Value bet Value bet...have a blast (you
might even win a few 100 and get to play
5-10 anyway)

Good Luck
