Structure for H.O.R.S.E. tournament?...

Hi,

A group of us have been playing NL Hold'em tournaments for a few years now and are looking for something a little different so one guy said let's play a HORSE tournament. Well everyone thought it was a great idea, but nobody knows how it would be structured. Can anyone recommend a structure, or somewhere we could find a structure for this type of tournament?

Not sure what you're looking for, but every game must be fixed limit or it will be unbalanced. The only real choice involved is when to switch games. I believe it's done by time in professional tournaments, but we always do it by round here at my house. Whatever you'd prefer.

How many players? What kind of players? What are the starting stacks?

FWIW, we recently did a multi-game limit tourney (no stud, though), for 10 players ($20 buy-in), and the small/big bets were as follows:

$0.10/$0.20
$0.20/$0.40
$0.25/$0.50
$0.40/$0.80
$0.50/$1.00
$0.75/$1.50
$1.00/$2.00
$1.50/$3.00
$2.50/$5.00
$4.00/$8.00
$5.00/$10.00
$7.50/$15.00

Of course, antes/bring-ins should be adjusted accordingly. This particular tournament ended late in the $4.00/$8.00 round, a bit earlier than I intended. The limit aspect actually seemed to increase aggressiveness among players. I didn't anticipate that.

Why not? Have the dealer ante for the table, like a dead blind.

As for the ending time, it sounds about right. 3-5% of the total chips = BB amount, that's when it will usually end. Think about- if you have 3 players, they average $60-70 (with usually someone much less) and the $12 in the pot represents way too much of your stack to not get involved.

You might actually check www.pokerpages.com.

If I recollect they actually do a H.O.R.S.E tournament with their software, so I'm sure they map out how they do it.

I originally wanted to to do a HORSE tourney, but too many regulars were telling me they didn't want to play stud. That may be my fault. Our first (and only) stud tournament was razz. We did that for Halloween last year (cue evil laugh), and razz can make for some grumpy players.
