Re: Should You Quit Your Day Job? — Part II
[ QUOTE ]
The pressure on the US is to relax current laws. In the end, the people of the US have the loudest voice, and there is nothing the gov't will do to restrict an activity engaged in by the masses. [/ QUOTE ] The article went on.... "But City sceptics will say the company is joining the blue chip index with fresh questions over its credibility as a serious home for investment by pension funds. Its flotation prospectus contained 30 pages of "risk factors", mostly related to the legality of online gambling in the US, where the group makes 86% of its revenues. None of PartyGaming's multi-millionaire foursome, who collectively still have majority control of the company, spoke out to defend the timing of the flotation yesterday." Needless to say, it's trading 10% lower than it's flotation level. [ QUOTE ] Irresponsible gambling is bad... grinding out profits in online poker is good! Bet with your head, not over it! [/ QUOTE ] I was merely presenting a very possible, "logical" response after reading one of these articles by the people who push hardest for policy change in gaming: the Christian Right. I even feel strongly that this will be a bipartisan effort. Go to google news and type "youth poker addiction." This is what people read. I am very happy that you grind it out. I've said in one of these posts that it's the greatest life ever. People that play poker do not drive policy, they drive Pontiacs. On election day, they are playing poker, not voting. Who's applying this pressure, anyway? Some college kid who thinks he can win the WSOP or the billions of people who beat online poker? |

The article went on.... [/ QUOTE ] Since you continue to focus on an article and obviously didn't take my advice to read the actual release, I'll do you the favor of posting the highlights for you... PartyGaming Plc Interim Results for the six months to 30 June 2005 Highlights * Revenues up 81% to $437.4m (2004: $241.5m) reflecting continued strong growth in poker * EBITDA before share option and IPO related expenses up 70% to $257.7m; EBITDA after share option and IPO related expenses of $195.4m (2004: $151.9m) * Basic earnings per share before share option and IPO related expenses of 6.2 cents; basic earnings per share of 4.5 cents (2004: 3.6 cents) * Operating cashflow up 67% to $270.9m (2004: $162.0m); net debt reduced by $231.2m to $119.5m in period * Poker KPIs - strong growth in real money sign-ups (up 73%) and active player days (up 102%); 7% decline in yield per active player day to $17.8 (2004: $19.2) * Casino KPIs – small increase in active player days; yield per active player day up 3% to $76.4 All references to “$” mean US dollars. Commenting on the interim results, Richard Segal, Chief Executive, said: “Following the successful IPO of the Group in June, we are delighted to be announcing our first set of interim results as a listed company. The Group’s performance further demonstrates the strength of our brands, the quality of our gaming products and the financial attractions of our business model. PartyGaming continues to enjoy strong positions in each of its core markets. As expected, whilst the online gaming market and poker in particular continues to show strong year on year growth, the rate of growth is continuing to moderate. As it does so, the Group will continue to adapt its marketing strategy and infrastructure to provide greater focus on customer retention and player value. Looking forward, the Group’s financial strength, strong market positions and scale provide a unique platform from which to grow the business through further international expansion, the development of new gaming products and additional distribution channels.” |

I was merely presenting a very possible, "logical" response after reading one of these articles by the people who push hardest for policy change in gaming: the Christian Right. [/ QUOTE ] This is possible, we will see them focus on this when the media focuses on this. When will this happen? Who knows, but whenever the media runs out of stories to scare people with, this will happen, not this summer since the summer is over, but next summer who knows, every summer the media needs something new to scare people and make them say "OMG I [insert activity media said was extremely dangerous]". Eventually this will probably be the cause of the poker bubble bursting the media will start pumping out stories about how every kid that plays poker gets hooked without any real stats or proof and dateline will have an interview with 1 or 2 kids that lost thousands of dollars and everyone will freak out. |

Re: Should You Quit Your Day Job? — Part II
They will present incredible comparative statisitics between now and five years ago. Biased they may be, but when you are talking about 3000% (example) increases teen gambling and such, the effect on the general public will be outrageous. There is no doubt in my mind that there will be 60 Minutes exclusives on 1.) teens that gamble and 2.) seniors that gamble compulsively.

Re: Should You Quit Your Day Job? — Part II well.... im stupid
[ QUOTE ]
A long time...I wonder where is this money going to come from, there is going to be a point when there will be more pros than money, thats pretty much the case at everything in life. I mean in the 80's everyone wanted to be a standup comedian so it sort of died off, right now its real state and poker, but everything has to end. I can see people online who are winners right now, but when push comes to shove, I am better than them and I will have to break them when there is less money available, I can see there are flaws in their games, its obvious, and im sure more than 1 is a pro. The question no one has asked is, where is this money going to come from? I mean does money magically appear out of nowhere? Someone has to be working for it no? [/ QUOTE ] No no no. Ever heard of Las Vegas? Atlantic City? Tunica? Biloxi? Foxwoods? Where does the money come from? People certainly aren't winning in those places- except for the pros... |
