Default Reno done right

I'm going to Reno with some buddies and I'm wondering about the best places to go, eat, stay, play at. What are some of the best hotesl for their price, best food, and best casinos to play at. IS there anything to do in Reno besides gamble? I know we could go to Tahoe but I'm just wondering.

Peppermill is far and above the best casino in Reno, IMHO. Actually it's my favorite casino anywhere. Restuarants are all really good, comps are great, poker room is nice, they usually have a 15-30 game going on the weekends and the rooms are big.

It's a little away from the other casinos (except the Atlantis) but they got everything you'd need there.

Sliver Legacy would be a distant second choice although I do take my grandparents up to Boomtown to play.

I've read that the Reno/Tahoe poker scene is dead. Nevertheless, Im heading up to Tahoe from Aug 12-21 as a compromise to the wife (who didnt want to go to Vegas), and will write up a trip report (probably focusing more on Tahoe's Harvey/Horizon casinos; I do hope to play at the Peppermill, though).

Peppermill is about 2 miles away from 'downtown' although it is still on Virginia St.

IMHO, there is no real compelling reason to stay in downtown Reno as the only place even worth seeing is Silver Legacy and maybe the Cal Neva club just for it's sordid reputation and the .99c ham and egg specials.

I used to live in Reno and still go there occasionally. For breakfast and lunch go to Heidi's on Virginia St near Plumb. For dinner I like Famous Murphy's also on Virginia near Moana.

The Peppermill is a ways from Downtown South on Virginia. It is nice but I think expensive and the food was not that great last time I was there.

I like to stay at either the Nugget in Sparks or the Reno Hilton if I want to stay at a casino. For a cheap motel, there's the Vagabond Inn which is staggering distance from Famous Murphy's and wlaking distance to the Peppermill.

Hope this helps. Have fun. I'll be passing through there this weekend.

If you're going to Tahoe just enjoy the lake and forget poker.

Why? I haven't been there since the poker boom started but was thinking of going to play. I would have guessed that with the younger, hipper crowd at Tahoe it would be pretty soft, at least as much so as the more retiree and locals crowd in Reno.
