The clean stuff is from the very beginning of the first epp of the season. The way it was shot makes you think it was present day, where the guy runs and grabs his gun upon hearing the hatch blown open.

The dirty images are from the next epp, when Jack, Kate and Locke see the hatch.

All this really means is that what we saw at the start of the first epp of the season is likely a flashback.

You never saw the guy's face in the first episode either. I bet it wasn't the Aussie guy Jack had met, but maybe the person the Aussie guy replaced.

That would be a good assumption.

Also, if it wasn't the hatch blowing open that 'cause him to grab a gun and run, what was it?

The Aussie guy stumbling into some other entrance into the hatch would be my guess.

Interesting, but when the guy was startled and looking through the camera or whatever, the view panned from him down the hallway and up the ladder to the hatch where Locke and Jack were staring down.

The pan doesn't exactly prove anything. It could simply be a transition showing its the same place at a differnet time. Unlikely IMO, but IMO I don't think this is a big part of the storyline, but I could be wrong

Yeah, I dismissed this possibility at the time. But looking at those pics, there are a lot of discrepencies between the various photos.

Remember though that the first scene from Man of Faith did include a shot of the newer washer and dryer in the background. So if it was a flashback, it couldn't have been too far in the past.
