Domanick Davis is a great back.

[/ QUOTE ]

You throw the word "great" around pretty loosely methinks. He's an average back. He's definitely not a franchise back to build a team around. They way overpaid for him.

[/ QUOTE ]
He's had 1000 yards or more rushing every season. He's also our second best receiver. His rookie contract extension that was signed a few months ago was fair I think. I look around and see many other running backs getting more than 4 years/22 million, with far less production.

I think this is the only time anyone has ever said this. Even Kris' mother thinks he sucks and is a choke artist.

Default Gross Speculation

ARE THE TEXANS TANKING IT?

We were going to hold this one until the Week Fourteen Ten-Pack, but we no longer could wait, especially in light of the stack of e-mails we've already received on the topic.

We believe (as do many of our readers) that the Texans are intentionally losing in order to preserve the No. 1 overall pick.

(Legal alert: That's a statement of opinion, not fact.)

The best proof? That pathetic 31-yard field goal attempt by kicker Kris Brown on an untimed down at the end of regulation, which reminded us of the wayward Niners' try at Soldier Field a few weeks back -- absent the gale force wind to push it 50 feet wide.

Brown is a professional kicker. Professional kickers don't hit 31-yard kicks that poorly, unless they're trying to. Snap was good, hold was good, and kick was good.

If the goal was to put it as far away from the posts as possible.

Sure, Brown wouldn't have even been in position to miss the kick that would have sent the game into overtime if the kickoff following Tennessee's go-ahead score hadn't been carted into Titan territory. (The extra play came courtesy of a 15-yard facemask penalty.) But if owner Bob McNair indeed is making it known that he wants the No. 1 overall pick, he's surely being discreet. Otherwise, someone will blab -- and McNair will have a lot of 'splainin' to do in New York.

In our view, the only people who really need to be in on the thing are the quarterback and the kicker. Since coach Dom Capers is as good as gone, it'd be too risky for McNair to tell him about the plan to get in position to snare Reggie Bush, since Capers would be too big of a risk to run his mouth after getting run out of town.

With an $8 million option bonus due to be paid to quarterback David Carr at the end of the season and with Carr desperately trying to avoid the "bust" label that's slowly attaching itself to his forehead like that sticker on a bunch of bananas, Carr likely would do whatever McNair wants.

Likewise, Brown's contract carries salaries that shoot from six figures to seven starting in 2006. How much of a stretch is it to think that McNair has paid a little visit to Kris within the past few weeks and explained to him that the big boss with the billion bucks would be forever grateful if the ball-booter keeps in mind the broader objectives when swinging his leg in crunch time?

"Ever hear of Adam Vinatieri, Kris? You know, they guy with the three Super Bowl rings? The only difference between you and him is that he's on a team that has the horses to put him in position to try those money kicks."

Look, we're only speculating here. We've got no proof that McNair is recruiting players with promises of future payouts to assist in a plan to lose games.

But with that said, why in the hell shouldn't he? His team sucks. And there's a guy who'll be available in April who could go a long way toward making the team not suck. And if the teams continues to do the only thing that it has done well over the past four years -- lose games -- the team will have a chance to turn the thing around and become competitive over the long term.

Who cares if they end up 1-15 this year? As long as the stigma of a winless season is avoided, a 1-15 mark now followed by a 12-4 in a few years is a lot better than a seemingly endless string of eight or less wins per year.

After all, how many Cowboys fans lost sleep over that 1-15 season in 1989 after the third Lombardi was in the case six years later?

We assume that there's a rule somewhere that prevents teams from intentionally losing games, but absent an admission by one of the guys who is in on the ruse, it's impossible to prove. As long as the NFL configures its draft order without an NBA-style lottery, the temptation will be there from time to time for teams to tank it.

And, in all honesty, if we were calling the shots in Houston, we'd sure be trying, without obviously trying, to stay at only one win if staying at one win could be the key to nabbing this generation's Gale Sayers.

The only way for the NFL to avoid this problem in the future is to institute a lottery, just as the NBA did amid rumors and speculation that the hoops team from the same town as the Texans laid down for two years in a row -- allowing them to land Ralph Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwon with the No. 1 pick in consecutive drafts.
