Default this JJ hand is still bothering me!

Live 2/5 at Belterra tuesday night. Table just opened with all regulars it appeared. I never played there before so I have nothing on anybody. Plus I can barely see Villan because a really big guy is sitting between us. 1st hand so everyone has the max. of $400.
6 handed, hero on button. villan utg+1
one fold, villan raises to 25, fold, hero raises to 50 (I did this because it is early in the game and I wanted to feel out some players I have never seen before. I know calling would be a better idea) villan calls.
107 in pot
flop 4 6 Q rainbow
Villan checks, hero bets 50, villan raises to 200, hero ????

I agree, but if you are going to raise, make it 100. The min raise doesn't accomplish much IMO...when you raise so small like that you are giving him odds to call with any pair.

As played, I find a fold when he makes the big check raise on the flop.

Make a bigger bet on the flop, 70 would be better. If he still raises, i would find a fold much easier.

i think the miniraise pre is bad here, bloats the pot with a marginal holding. I would just smooth call here (as you would normally do).

You are right that smooth calling is generally going to be superior here. If you want to raise make it 75 preflop and if he calls bet 100 on the flop. As played i would bet 65-75 on the flop because betting 50 really opens you up to being played back at by a tricky aggro opponent with less than a premium holding.

it's pretty much already be said but; raise more preflop or just call. bet a little more on flop, fold to his c/r.
