Tim Montgomery's retirement...

In case you don't know, Tim Montgomery, former world record holder in the 100 meters, retired today after being suspended for 2 years for doping.

Okay, a couple things.

1) Montgomery never tested positive.
2) He now has to give back all his winnings since 2002, which may be up to $1 million dollars.

Now, I'm against track and field athletes using steroids and other illegal performance enhancing drugs for obvious reasons. But doesn't something like this almost do more harm than good for the sport?

I hope that the evidence was pretty damn overwhelming.

This is rediculous, either show him the positive test, or the pictures of him doing it, or let him be. In my opinion, he should be able to sue them (in a fictional world court) for harassment.

if this was your career and livelihood, im pretty sure you would be pissed at seeing it totally ruined by some circumstantial evidence when there is a binary test of the issue which you have always passed, you would be "miffed".

I didn't say it was a valid reason, I just was giving some info to the OP.

I'm torn on this issue. He never tested positive, but that doesn't really mean anything. It's like saying Mark McGwire never tested positive either. We all know both of them did it.

He shouldn't have to give back all of his earnings, but I believe he should lose his world record. It's not like they are going to take his earnings and pay back the presumebly clean runners who got paid less because they lost to Montgomery

it was, and the fact that he never fought very hard against it either says a lot. As someone who's followed the sport of track and field closely for years, theres not another person I would've rather seen this happen too. good riddance.
