Why bet the river here? Villain is not calling without an ace or a nine, so you're splitting or losing. I think I'd check-call a small bet, and might fold to a huge overbet.

[/ QUOTE ]

By betting on the river, he at least gave himself a chance to get away from the hand. If he checks, and Villian bets big, then he's in a tough spot. Betting 5 allowed him to get away from this hand cheaply in my opinion...

[/ QUOTE ]

Didn't Hero make the hand difficult for himself when he probe-bet the turn? Wouldnt it have been better to put out a more reasonable bet, say $2.00? Isn't villan's only real response to the probe-bet a pot-sized raise, which is what he did? I really have trouble with the tiny little bet on the turn.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, I think he should have either bet about he pot; the minimum bet makes no sense.

And to coax him into betting a worse hand. And because hand protection is not an issue here. If I am ahead, there is a very good chance that villain is drawing completely dead.

If you c/c the turn, and then check the river, i think you're setting yourself up for a problem. Most players will overbet the pot there with an Ace or a 9 so you might face an expensive decision. So i think that you at least need to bet the river if you c/c the turn.

Ok, well at least I'm half-right, then. I would have made a value bet on the turn b/c I'm not concerned about hand protection, either. I want value, and to get it, I bet.

This might be a limit approach that doesn't work here? B/c I don't want to back up this hand with my whole stack?

Especially with it being mid or high cards. I might not think that he necessarily has a deuce or three or four, but certainly he could be in there with any number of hands involving a 9.

I disagree. Most players will bet an A and a 9 fairly strongly but, by checking the turn, there's a smaller pot to fight over. If we assume villain will bet a consistent percentage of the pot (full pot, double pot, whatever), we pay less to split and lose less when we're behind.

If villian will push all-in with an A or 9 whether we bet the turn or not, betting the turn is still wrong as we have to be more certain we are beat on the river (due to the pot odds) to fold.
