Default PF Raise Rule?

Classic:
"3xBB + 2x limpers or raisers total=proper raise size."

Lately I've been trying to use this - but I've often found myself doing the math and then saying to myself, "what the %#%@#$%?" and then ignoring that formulas results.

Does that formula assume antes are in play? That would make sesne to me.

Are pot-zized or slightly larger than pot sized raises PF too small?

Example:
Blinds 50 100 - no ante.
On button with some holding I want to raise with.
Three limpers in front.
Pot = 450.
I should raise too....
3 x 100 = 300. Three limpers for 300 x 2 = 600.
300 + 600 = 900.

This formula cranked out at twice the pot?

I guess it would price out people trying to over-call around the back of the table....

What am I missing?

Solution: don't use a formula.

Seriously, the formula is for people who can't think on their own. Every situation is different so learn how to deal with them by experience.

I don't use a formula and I recognize that different situations require different types and amounts of raises...

but I have respect for a lot of what I read on this site...so I've beent trying to use this / see the validity in iti....and I'm not getting it /seeing it.

Fair enough. First off, I'm pretty sure the formula is only applicable when the blinds are small. In your example, the blinds are 50/100, most of the time your stack will be so small in relation to the pot that you'll just have to push.

Second, it depends on what your cards are. If you have AA, you might welcome a caller or two. So you should raise to whatever amount you think will get one caller. If you have AQ or something, you probably want to discourage action and just take the pot right there.

Third, don't believe everything you see on this forum. That is sure to get you into a lot of trouble.

The way I've heard the rule of thumb expressed is

BB(3 + limpers)

in your example this would be 100(3 + 3) = 600.

It would be nice if there were formulas that worked every time...

To bad poker post-dates Pythagoras.

True true....but for the newer 2+2 reader...sifting through the good/bad when pretty much everyone posting as 100x the expereince as me....soemtimes I feel prideful and cocky to say, 'you're wrong' to a guy who 8 tables all day when I'm happy if I get a half dozen SnGs in a week. (Tonight I played 6 and am THRILLED.)

This one seemed credible...but wasn't making any sense practically....

It might make more sense if you were playing a live event where everybody at your table had a three digit M.
