I never really noticed any Canada bashing until that South Park movie came out. Then the Canada bashing seemed to get very trendy.

I think Canadians make more jokes about Americans than the other way around. Americans just never hear the jokes because they don't have access to Canadian media. Canadians are inundated with American media so they hear the Canada bashing a lot more.
The "jokes" about Canada only started turning hateful when Canada didn't support the US in the "Coalition of the Willing" in Iraq.
