Default 6 max vs a short handed full table

I have been trying my hand at 6 max tables recently after noticing that i tended to run pretty good when full tables became short handed. The results over my 1st 4 k hands have not been good to put it politely. I have relaxed my starting requirements a little bit to compensate for being short handed, but I find hand my reading is WAY off base and i end up calling down too often with marginal hands. Is there a difference in how a short handed full table plays as compared to a 6 max table? What adjustments if any should I make between the 2?

I have a feeling the competition might be better at 6 max tables simply because people who choose to play short handed usually realize that there are differences between full table play and 6 handed play whereas on a full table that suddenly becomes short handed a lot of the players don't know to make adjustments in strategy
