40k in total since I started playing about 15 months ago

Yeah the rake at the low limits is a real killer. Its a shame -- If the rake was substantially lower or rake free, some phenomenol winrates would be achaivable -- you could make a decent salary on a tiny weeny bankroll.

It's pretty amazing anyone can make money playing less than 20/40 with the amount of money people pay in rake.

yup.

Of the first $100 an hour I make, $65 goes to rake, then the government wants $10, so I get $25. I guess I'm working on commission.

I get 35% back and my friend gets another 25% of my rake for referring my other friend who gets 1% of my rake as well, so the site is only getting 39% of my rake, so it aint all bad for me

Would the rake $, as a % of your winnings be a better gauge?

In a business I owned the materials cost was about 25%. Some jobs higher, some lower, but overall it averaged about 25%.

Payroll, and associated expenses, also at about 25%. And so on for every other cost item. We were looking to maintain about 10% pre-tax net. In this particular industry, annual surveys kept everyone informed about how comparable size companies were doing and we could compare every cost item.

What I'm getting at is, consider the "privilege," as you call it, a cost of doing business - your overhead. If your gross is 100k, yeah, 55k is a large part. But, what other expenses do you have that get charged against the gross? I don't have any idea how serious players keep their records, but it might be interesting to compare the % rather than the $.
