Push the river, but full pot flop. Since you didn't, full pot turn. It makes it a lot easier to build a pot.

Almost any good-sized bet will leave you pot-committed, I probably put down a bet for 250 hoping for a call (or raise).

I'd push the river too. So many players online just can't fold top pair even with weak kicker. There doesn't seem to be any reasonable hand he's likely to have that you need to worry about

With a hand and flop like this, you really have to build the pot. I think you might want to bet the flop harder. Your bet was barely 50% of the pot, i would bet at least 80% of the pot here. If you get a call, the pot builds which allows you to make a bigger bet on the turn as well, again, building the pot...then the push on the river will not seem out of line. if he calls the flop and turn, he will defintely pay you off on river.

I don't have any chips left in front of me by the time the river is dealt. Sadly, this means I don't always reach the river, but oh well.

A pot sized bet on the turn accomplishes a few things.

1. Makes him pay more for his draw (I don't think he has one but this is the 22 level so who knows)
2. Won't chase away his TP hand
3. Most importantly the combination of your hand and the size of the pot means you are pot commited on the river in my opinion so why don't you bet more on the turn so your opponent will feel commited to go all in if their draw turns into a mid pair or with their exisiting top pair doesn't encounter any scare cards.

95% of the time this will make no difference, but if your opponent has QT maybe they could get away from a river push of 570, but if that river push is around 400 into a much larger pot then this could change their mind.

wow... this definitely might be a leak in my game then.. i guess i always thought it was right to at least entice your opponent to make mistakes (based on my holding).

for example, say you are sure your opponent is on a flush/straight draw -- then you would make bets according to what amount would give them less than the odds they need to draw, but still enticing them to call.

i guess if i was sure he had top pair (which he did) then i could bet alot more since he figures his hand is already made.

anyway, thanks for the help.

I don't think it's a big leak at all, just a personal preference.

I take the view that if he doesn't have top pair, then I'm probably not going to get paid much anyway, and if he does, he'll probably call a lot more.

Certainly in $55s and maybe even $33s you have to try to get some value for your bets, but also certainly in the $11s you can just bet what you like most of the time, so I bet big.

The $22s is the level I have played the least of the four, but I tend to treat them like $11s unless the players can show me that I should be doing otherwise.

i assume this is because players will not tend to pay u off with top pair weak kicker at the higher levels?
