Default So you\'re planning on not filing your taxes....

Consider this:

If you file a tax return, the IRS only has 3 years to dispute or audit that return. (The statute of limitations on collecting the money is 10 years)

If you do not file at all, the clock does NOT start ticking, they can go after you 20 years from now.

So if you are a college student without sufficient income to file (when you don't count your poker income), you are setting yourself up for a future nightmare.

Win a big tourny 15 years from now, and the IRS will decide to dig into all those years you didn't file. They went after Richard Hatch (the first Survivor winner) btw after he won his million dollar prize.

You forgot to mention that Richard neglected to report an entire MILLION that he won on national TV.

Otherwise good advice

I'm sure someone at the IRS checked into Greg Raymer's returns, but saw they were in order. If they hadn't been we'd have seen the Front Page Headline... [b]"World Poker Champ is Tax Delinquent"

I'm eagerly awaiting someone on 2+2 to get bent over and raped by the IRS so we'll have a good thread to point people with your attitude towards.

I dont understand the I'm not paying attitude. I assume all these college kids if they were flipping burgers would be taxed at source, just cos you earn on the internet playing cards doesnt mean you are excempt from paying.

Screwing with the tax man is never a good idea, there is a chance you will get caught and when you do the interest and additional charges (as well as the chances of a criminal record) will make the small amount you might pay now into a larger amount later.

You guys are playing an adult game you should suck up and take your adult responsibilities. Finding ways to net off you income to reduce you taxes we all do, sticking your head in the sand and not paying is just madness.

Theres a guy here hasnt filled in his tax return for three years he now is going to have to pay $15k plus charges all in one lump sum.

If you dont agree with the law then lobby for change but dont ignore it.

"If you file a tax return, the IRS only has 3 years to dispute or audit that return. "

Common practice is to under-report income, AKA fraud. This is not covered by statute.

What's the difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion?

Ten to Twenty years.

This has already happened in a prior year. I'll let him/her elaborate if they wish to.
