I recommend using a first name for his new last name. Something like... Nathan. He could be Matthew Nathan. Or, Nathan, Matthew for all you form filers. Maybe John. Or Thomas. I like Matthew Thomas.
You could go way out there and pick a female first name, just to be distinctive. Matthew... Julia. Yes - Matthew Julia. You could call him Big Matt J. Or MJ, even. |

'howard' was the first one that came to mind. 'matthew howard', 'matt howard', etc all sound ok to me.
