Default Please help me learn my lines

I have a script for a presentation thats about 40 minutes long. I want to give this presentation nearly verbatim without using notes in about one week. Are there any actors or presenters out there who can give me some pointers?

Things I've thought of and started working on:

1. Read the whole thing through several times and am beginning to recognize the various transitions and what they lead to.

2. Try to memorize small sections then piece them together.

Things I've thought of and haven't started working on:

1. Read the whole thing into a recorder then play back the recording while silently reading the text.

2. Writing-out the text so I can improve recall. - Is handwriting better than typing for improving recall? My hand hurts just thinking about it.

Any better techniques out there? I'm all ears.

Thanks,

cbf

In my experience the most effective thing to do is to write it out a bunch of times (either handwrite or type, doesn't matter). After you do that, then say it outloud in front of a mirror over and over. I'm talking 100 or more times. Really.

Well yeah, he's not going to learn by exclusively doing this, but it sure as hell doesn't hurt.

I took it as a jopke. Don't know if I'll get serious advice here or not, but it can't hurt to try. Anyone?

Milli Vinilli (sp) - that's good.

cool. I'll start typing it up. I've done it three times in front of the mirror today - I'll do it a few more times tonight and many times daily.

Any other ideas? Thanks!

Don't memorize it verbatim if you're only giving the presentation once. You'll sound like a robot or a bad actor, and you won't be able adjust the presentation to respond to audience reaction. Plus, if you forget a line, it may throw you off and it'll be obvious to everyone.

Memorize a fairly detailed outline of the points you're going to cover, and if there are specific passages that are particularly important or complex, memorize them word-for-word.

It'll be less work, and a better presentation.
