Default Chips distribution help.

I need some advice on chips distribution for a home tourney for 7-8 players. im using a custom chips set bought on ebay.
its the standard chips distribution for the 500 pcs. set. 150 ($1), 150 Red ($5), 50 Green ($25), 100 Blue ($50), 50 Black ($100)

So what is the best distribution with these ? and what about the blinds level ?

thx and have a nice day.

Jonny

The amout of chips each player starts with, the starting blind level, and the time/amout of increase all depend on how long you are trying to make the tournament last. The longer you want to it last, the smaller the blinds should start in relation to the stacks.

Although for a good night of fun, I would recomend changing the chip values so that the lowest chip value is 25 "dollars". Each player should start with about 5,000 in chips with the blinds starting at 25-50. Increase the blinds every 10-15 minutes or so. Blinds should go from 25-50 to 50-100, then you can either do 75-150, 100-200, 125-250 (increasing blinds by 25 each round) or 25-50, 50-100, 100-200, 200-400 (doubling the blinds every round).

Again this all depends on how long you want the tourny to last and how this suits the game. I would suggest trying out different structures and seeing what works best but this is a pretty good start.

the reason i would like not to change the chips value is because they are printed on the chips, and i do not want to confuse the players. i would like the tourney to last about 2.5 hours.

Because you've got so many $1 chips, you can give every player 100 in chips and start the blinds at:
1-1
1-2
2-4
3-5
etc.

Then again, if you're only playing 7-8 you could just go with 1000 in chips and start at
5-10
10-20
15-30
25-50
etc.

You have a total value of 12,150 in chips. I would suggest the following utilizing all of your chips:

color (value): qty = $total value
white ($1): 10 = $10
red ($5): 8 = $40
Green ($25): 4 = $100
Blue ($50): 9 = $450
Black ($100): 4 = $400

For a total of $1000 total per player or about 500 big blinds per player which is a lot! You have enough chips for 11 buy-ins with this distribution. There are gonna be a lot of chips in play which may or may be what you want though...it can get crazy after a while, but some people like having a bunch of chips in from of them.

As far as blinds and timing, with 8 players, you will have 8K in play. When the big blind is about 800 (or 10% of the total chips) the tournament should be over or heads up.

Levels
Level) sb/bb
1) 1-2
2) 2-4
3) 5-10
4) 10-20
5) 25-50
6) 50-100
7) 100-200
8) 200-400
9) 400-800
10) 800-1600

With 9 levels to the BB at 800, your levels should last about 15 minutes...15 minutes x 9 levels = 2 hours 15 minutes. I suggest coloring up the whites after level 2 and the reds after level 4. Depending on how many players you have, you may not be able to color everyone up though.

An simpler alternative:

5 reds ($25)
5 greens ($125)
5 blacks ($500)
for a total of $650 per player or about 65 big blinds (a little more reasonable...maybe a little light). With 8 players, you will have 5200 in chips in play. When the big blind is around 500 the tournament should end. With this few of chips in play, you may need to make change for players more frequently during play, but is much easier to deal with. Each player has 15 chips total rather that 35 with the previous example. You could even add 4 blue chips, but then you would want to remove one of the levels below to stay in the 2 1/2 hour range.

Levels:
5-10
10-20
15-30
25-50
50-100
75-150
100-200
150-300
200-400
300-600
500-1000

These blinds go up a bit slower (they do not double every level) helping to keep players in longer. With the same 15 minute blinds, it should still last about 2 1/2 hours.

These are 2 ways of doing it leading to different tournament textures. Try each one, change them a bit and you will find what you like.

Hope this helps,
K
