to cheat somewhat, I have pondered the question that gets asked from time to time, the if you could take one CD to an island question. My answer is not one disc, but my not too big boxed set of the Beethoven symphonies. Karajan. Not the first or last, I think he recorded 3 complete cycles for DG. and I think mine is the middle one. I can't stand the Bernstein recording of the 5th I have and don't particularly like the Giulini(sp?) version of the 9th I have. I am not very knowledgeable about the music, but I do prefer Karajan's versions.

any spam/spyware free places i can DL some beethoven etc?

IMO classical doesn't seem to download well (e.g., song tags are often incorrect or incomplete). I'd try CDs from Naxos, Sony Classics or other low priced vendors. When you find stuff you like, you can venture on to more expensive (but not always better) renditions. You can also sample some cuts on Amazon.

Albinoni - Adagio In G Minor For Strings And Organ

sample here

I have this double CD of Albinoni that seems to get a lot of play around my house. It's well priced and has the above cut.

Chopin, Prelude in D# major, "Raindrop". I've been using that to go to sleep to for years now; you can just drift away into the music listening to that.

I have trouble sleeping and used to crank nature sounds all night but more recently I've been listening to string quartets etc. The Chopin piece above is very good buy sort of soars in places, not always best for sleeping.

Andy Fox will hate me for this but Dennis Prager's talk show used to start off with "Concerto A Due Cori No 2 V Allegro Ma Non Troppo" by Handel. Not the best but very good. I have it on my player but can't find a link on Amazon.
