Default Why is the NBA not as popular as it was?

Because Jordan retired (for the 8th time, and for good)?

Is it the hip-hop, thug, black image that seems to be associated with the NBA?

Is it because teams don't average 110 pts a night?

Lack of stars? Too young?

I used to love basketball, watching it, playing it, etc, but now I could really care less. Is this just a general consensus these days?

It's the officials calling fouls every 30 seconds. It ruins the game. Since the NBA changed their officiating guidelines several years ago it's been crap.

Also, the zone defense sucks.

My uncle, who is a successful basketball coach, says he does not like watching the NBA because it is not a team game anymore, but one guy trying to score each possession and four guys standing around.

It's a combination of every reason in this thread. Lack of Team Ball, over officiating, thug image, and the lack of a star like Michael Jordan. I really don't know what the game needs to regain popularity again; hell it could be worse? It could be the NHL.

they need to do something about the end of games not taking so long. for someone like me who is a very casual fan who just watches some knick games and the playoffs, it is totally unappealing how long an endgame takes.

It's a lot of reasons, but I think the youth factor is the biggest part of it. The young guys in the league in many ways have so much to learn about the game and have little that identifies them from one another. When the norm was staying 4 years at college and coming out early meant "future star", the guys coming into the league were not only more well-versed in parts of the game besides one on one play, they were already somewhat established to the fan base. Marketing them from that point was easy.

so you would rather watch guys pass the ball around until someone gets open, rather than watch A.I. break someone's ankles?
