Default Can you make a living playing live 3/6 poker?

I have heard some guys I play with say that it is their job, playing live 3/6 limit at the casinos around where I live, which I find hard to believe. The stakes just aren't high enough. I mean you could make a living I guess, but I don't see how you could consisently make more than 20K a year and that would be playing 40 hours plus. You figure you see 33 hands or so an hour, and even if you are a 3 BB/100 hands winner that is only six dollars an hour. I would like to get to the point where I can consistently beat 10/20 limit live. I think one could make a living of about 40-50K if they were really good in the live games.

If the games are loose enough, they are talented enough enough, they play enough hours a day, every day it could be done for probally 20-30K a year, if they dont pay their taxes that's not bad at all.

Everytime someone at my 2/4 table at party says they are a pro I laugh my ass off because they're 40/5/.8. Have you considered the possibility that you're being lied to?

FWIW, I think you'd have to be very good, commeted and spend a ton of time playing low stakes poker to make a terrible living. If these guys really did play 3/6 at a casino for a living they'd be very poor.

I play 3/6 at the Commerce Casino and you can definitely make some $$ on the weekends. I've been averaging $50/hour for the past few weekends because there are so many loose/drunk players that call down to the river with weak hands and the "any two cards" mentality (especially Saturday night). I've probably been on an up streak, but the 3/6 game is pretty easy to beat consistantly. Even so, the games are much quieter during the week, and grinding it out at the low limits seems like drudgery. It would make sense to move up to at least 4/8 as you would make 25% more money and the game is just as easy to beat.

Upstreak. I've had the great honor to sit at said juicy tables at Commerce for hours only to not win a single hand (I think my record is 4 hours cold.) When you get dealt crap, and you get cracked, evnetually you will get stacked =D

The games are juicy, but 50 an hour (8.3333 bb/hr at 3/6) is definitely not sustainable... also consider that the rake at merce is 4 bucks a hand. At 2/4, assuming you win a lowly 6 percent of your hands, thats a -6bb/100 inherent disadvantage you have to overcome.

I play 5/10 limit at a live casino near Chicago on the weekends. I am averaging close to 2BB/hr ($20) in my 10 most recent trips out there over the last several months. So I feel that it would be possible for a 5/10 player (or perhaps a 3/6 player if me puts in more hours) can make a living, such a player would probably want to move up in limits at some time in order to earn more per hour.

Having said that, I feel that this will change soon. Poker has exploded in the last 3 years with the WPT and WSOP coverage, coupled with online poker rooms. More people are playing than every. However, I believe that within the next 5-10 years, a new "fad" will come around, or the bad "fish" who throw their money away at the table now will run out of money or give up once they realize they can't win. So while I believe it is possible to make a living at the lower limits today, it may not be the same in a few years unless you move up.

Thanks for your completely insignificant winrate.

The rake in these live small games are ridiculous, you'd need a good rake structure and a very very soft player pool to make any kind of money.
