Buying a Dell...How does this look?
Hey,
I don't know a whole lot about computers. I've been trying to customize a really nice computer (really fast and all that good stuff). I'd be using it mainly for music and multitabling, and I need a computer that will work with that new 30 inch Dell monitor (is this video card right?) that I will be purchasing. How does this look? http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/c...600F4&s=dhs I was going to upgrade the following: Processor: PentiumŪ D Processor 830 with Dual Core Technology (3.0GHz, 800FSB) [add $90 or $2/month2] Hard Drive: 500GB Serial ATA II Hard Drive (7200RPM) [add $260 or $8/month2] Speakers: Dell 5650 5.1 100 Watt Surround Sound Speaker System with Subwoofer [add $40 or $1/month2] Keyboard: Dell USB Keyboard add $0 (they don't include a keyboard and then offer to add one for $0? how does this makes sense?) Office Software: Microsoft Office Basic - Includes Word, Excel and Outlook email [add $149 or $4/month2] Downgrade: Video Ready w/o Monitor [subtract $360] (getting that 30 inch monitor as soon as it comes out) So in total it would run me like $3500... Should I upgrade/downgrade on anything to make the computer run better? Thanks. |

Re: Buying a Dell...How does this look?
For what you are going to be using the computer for, you could build a similiar setup for around $1000, and spend the extra $2000 to buy that 30" monitor.

I don't think any of those video cards will support the native resolution on the 30" monitor.

[/ QUOTE ] I wholeheartedly agree with this post. Hell, just call Dell and tell the commision paid sales rep what you need the computer for and the'll give you a lower priced machine. Hook up with a local builder/mom&pop shop and you can get your requirements for $1k easily. It'll probably just be beige instead of "dell graphite". "I need a database desktop" -- translates to: I want to run pokertracker with a million hand database while multitabling, surfing the net and managing my music. If they don't get this reference just tell them that you run normal desktop applications and a fairly demanding database application. If they press you further, tell them, "A geek told me to say that." edit: get in touch via email with newegg.com and zipzoomfly.com... I'm sure they can fill your requirements for far less than dell. |

However, for apple they have a 30" LCD that you need a dual-link DVI card for. I'm don't believe those are commercially available for PC though. |
