my answer was the alarm clock....

its my belief that people are much better off when they naturally go to sleep when they are tired and wake up on their own. This would make strict schedules pretty hard, but i'm not really a fan of that either and think that if we all just operated on a natural schedule we'd be just fine. Things got done before the existance of clocks, but oh well.
