$100 buying live 2-3 blinds at Commerce. table is reasonable, opponent I've busted once getting KK vs JJ and having him push against a raise with a T-high flop. He has $18 in front of him but $100 more coming.

I raise to $15 in mid position with A [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] J [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], he calls on the button.

Flop comes A [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] J [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 4 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].

I bet $15 he calls.

Turn is the K [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

I bet $25 he makes it $50. I call.

River is 7 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img].

I check he tries to bet $70 (he doesn't have those chips yet), but i point out that he can only bet $38. At this point I'm pretty sure I'm beat, but have trouble folding for $38 into a pot that is already $198 with 2 pair.

How do you all play this?

[/ QUOTE ]

you need to bet more on the flop, which will get you in happily on any turn

you obviously call the turn/river at this point

the commerce 2/3 game is simple tourney poker in cash game form until multiple people get over 2 buyins. he has 40BB's. in a 40BB game, TPGK is a monster and AJ MUST be played, especially within the context of how bad such players are.

anyone telling you to fold AJ in such a game can make a living stuffing their rear with coal to produce jewelry. AJ is the 16th best hand in poker.

...you need to rethink this response W/R to the situation presented, and in general.

1. AJ is the 16th best hand in poker

2. you need to evaluate your responses wit respect to the situation; here he is certainly not playing under "normal" circumstances.

If you bet $15 PF and the button calls, this should mean the pot is $35, right (assuming no limpers)?

You have to bet at least $25 on this flop, I would say, then push the turn. The way you played it, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he had QK[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. His could of course have a set of fours, but that's just how life is. With 30 BB stacks you're not getting away from two pair, especially not aces up.

Would you rather rank your hands by preflop strength or by profit?

if you can't make a profit from MP playing what is surely the 16th strongest hand in poker and surely in the top 20% of hands earnings-wise then there are many holes in your game that need to be adressed before you attempt to play anything, including the 15 hands which beat it.

moreover, under the game conditons described, i'd postulate that AJ/AJs would earn HIGHER than it's strength ranking.

do you see why?

I honestly can't believe people here. folding to a raise is good poker, open-folding AJ in MP 9 handed would be the weakest, most pathetic thing I've ever seen in poker.

the statement holds for both hands, so again i'll ask if you understand the reasoning?

or perhaps you'd like to continue skirting the question and nitpicking semantics?
