1. Disconnect your computer from all networks immediately.
2. Back up any important data.
3. Re-format and reinstall windows.
4. Get a good firewall program like Kerio Personal Firewall. AVG Anti Virus is a good addition as well. Both are free.

This is a poker players nightmare..... I think i remember that you play decent stakes so it is double bad.

Talk this through with someone who knows what there talking about.

Personally, I like AVG for antivirus and ZoneAlarm for firewall (both free & easy to use).

stigmata,

Yeah, this is a nightmare. Especially, with having well into 5 figures online it would be devastating to have my passwords hacked.

Well, I've already changed all my passwords on secure machines, so I should be safe there. I also have a professional who will be out in 30 minutes to take care of everything that needs to be done.

Just can't wait till this is over...

When your machine is all pretty and cleaned up again, use Zonealarm firewall and ditch the other crappy ones.

It completely stealths your PC to others trying to snoop, they don't even know it's there. Also, NOD32 (www.eset.com) is probably the best anti-virus you can get right now. VERY effective and leaves a very small footprint on your system resources.

Default To You and all knowledgable of antivirus/firewall software

On my new Dell I have a few spyware programs and a Norton product that includes antivirus and a firewall. Is this a good product? Is it sufficient?

It may be a trial, and if it expires I plan on buying the full version.

Does anyone suggest a different approach for keeping my [censored] safe?

Get a hardware router/firewall with NAT, and use a software solution like ZoneAlarm

Ripped (or anyone),

I did the scan with trend micro and it came up with 4 infected files (two of which are apparently spyware):

TROJ PERLOG.D
TROJ PKEYLOG.A
TSPY BANCOS.AED
BKDR CCT.B

I can't, nor can any progam I've used, delete the "TROJ" files. Should I just search the internet for solutions or call a professional?

Thanks for the help,

Google for a program called Dr.Delete, it deletes files upon Windows startup and I've had some success using it to get rid of virii.

If that fails, Google for the virus' name and follow directions (usually from Trend Micro or Symantec website) on how to get rid of it.

I am far from a computer security expert (or even a computer expert generally), but I am quite paranoid about this stuff. This is what I do:

1. Keep Windows XP up-to-date, esp. with respect to security patches. The SP2 Security Center should be configured to auto-update.

2. Run an antivirus program like Norton or PC-Cillin, and of course all of the patches should be up-to-date also.

3. If running over a WLAN, make sure that you change the router name and password, turn off SSID, enable MAC address filtering, and turn on WEP or WPA encryption.

4. Download Microsoft's anti-spyware beta program, which is free to any original XP licensees. It will scan your computer each day for spyware changes to the registry, etc. I also periodically run Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy, both of which are freeware.

5. Run the ZoneAlarm firewall. This may seem unnecessary since Im connected through a router, but I like it when ZoneAlarm tells me that a program is trying to access the Internet. Some programs always have permission (e.g., Outlook), but other programs require specific permission each time.

6. Use a password completion program rather than type passwords manually. You can purchase the program Roboform which will autocomplete passwords for you, and thus defeat keystroke loggers. (It also makes password management easier). I own an IBM Thinkpad T42p, which has a built-in security chip function that can serve the same purpose, so I dont need the software.

7. Encrypt key files and folders. I use ABI-Encoder and have a 128-bit strong encryption on my password file, which I keep typed out on an Excel spreadsheet. Then this file is in turn stored in an encypted folder (using the IBM proprietary encryption chip). Accessing this file is a major pain in the ass, but I am quite certain that even if somebody were to steal my laptop, they would be unable to compromise my passwords).

8. Finally, make sure that you are using best practice for password generation. Obviously, dont use easy to guess passwords like names. You passwords should be a combination of alpha and numbers, ideally randomly mixed. Ideally every password (and user ID) should be unique. Of course, I realize that everybody (myself included) uses repeat passwords, and few are perfectly random. So this is what I suggest. Define a standard "high security" password for websites that relate to money (e.g., online banking, poker accounts, Paypal, etc.). Next define a "medium security" passwords for accounts that could be profitably hacked (e.g., Amazon one-click orders, Buy.com one-click, Priceline, etc.) Then define a low-security passwords for use with accounts like NY Times, 2+2, etc. This way, only the most trusted sites get access to the high security passwords etc. Several years ago, somebody ran a scam of giving free porn and then allowed users to identify account names and passwords. (Users actually got access to free porn.) Unfortunately, some people used their "default" user ID and password, and this information was subsequently tested against major known financial websites. You can guess the rest. Having a high/medium/low password protocol would defeat this risk, and also solves the problem of where a trusted website's password information is hacked.

Everyone seems to be advocating ZoneAlarm. Has it significantly improved since I last used it? It used to be a serious resource whore. I guess there is not reason to switch from KPF anyways.
