Default 2001FP question (original, I swear!)

Is it preferential to:

a) Have your 2001FP power down after 10 mins or so (without manually turning it off, using the "power save" option under desktop properties).

b) Manually turn off the power.

Power save. I never turn off my monitors.

It's fine until the point at which the lamps burn out.

Just to make it confusing and show both sides of the story I usually turn mine off when I'm done. XP locks my computer when I do which I like.

I turn mine off whenever I leave home, I don't have windows do it for me after 10 minutes or whatever (I mean, the option is on for like 30 minutes but that only happens when I am interrupted, which is pretty rare).

Hi.

Has anyone connected 2001fp to an ups? It seems to require some kind of special power cable. Any tips?

So, the crux of my question.

Does the power save feature increase the lamp longevity? Or do I need to fully power down, say, overnight?

My understanding (I'm not a hardware guy, but I've got a number of friends who are who have told me this -- of course, they could be full of it, but I trust 'em) is this: The lamp has a finite (unknown) number of hours that it will stay lit. So the answer to your question is: Yes, if the monitor is in power-save mode, the lamp will be off and you'll be fine. If you tell the OS to never sleep the display (and you don't physically turn the monitor off), however, the lamp will always be active and therefore burn out much quicker.

As a side note, I was also told that varying the brightness doesn't matter -- that is, if you turn down the brightness to 80% of normal, you're not going to get 125% of the hours that the lamp would've given you at full brightness. Bummer.
