I think the check-raise makes sense. If "The Man" has the flush, The Kid risks nothing by checking to him since he will bet anyways. If The Man doesn't, The Kid loses value when The Man would have bluffed 5th when checked to. By check-raising, he wins more against both a flush and a bluff (but of course loses more in the very unlikely circumstance where the Man has the straight flush).
