Is there some kind of newsletter distributed by the indie overlords that tells you what bands to say you like?

No, no way. I'm 100% original.

Taproot - Blue-Sky Research

And it's not even close, *for me*. I'm willing to grant that everyone has different tastes in music and no one person's are superior to another's. Of the 13 tracks on that CD, 10 of them blow me away every time I listen to them. And there's zero question as to whether it's rock.

I haven't really heard of most of the bands/albums in this thread except Audioslave...guess I'll have to give Out of Exile a listen since it's been getting so many nods here.

I think both Bright Eyes were good, though, one is more "rock" than the other.

Social Distortion-I have been listening to them since I was 13, so I can't imagine not liking one of their albums.

Wow, I was really lame this year and didn't keep up with crap.

Yeah, I did a quick search and didn't see it mentioned. I was shocked -- had to give it some love

PS- Apparantly I need to check out the Sufjan album. A friend of mind said he didn't like it much. That's what I get for listening to him.

Not sure about naming just one for my favourite of the year, but if I had to make a list... I'm going with the indie theme and not strictly rock, ps.

Spoon - Gimme Fiction
Anthony and the Johnsons - I Am a Bird Now
The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
Doves - Some Cities
Architecture in Helsinki - In Case We Die
The Fiery Furnaces - EP
LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem
The National - Alligator

And probably some other ones that just aren't popping to mind right now.

After sleeping on it, I think if we're going with "Best Rock Album" of 2005, I'd probably give my nod to Doves. Maybe part of that is because I think of them as more "rock" than a lot of the other albums I loved this year which I guess I think of more as pop, but whatever. Probably not my favourite album of the year, but if someone asked me for the best "rock" album of 2005, I'd probably point them to Doves' Some Cities and next to Spoon's Gimme Fiction.
