Default Mehh... why can\'t I make dual monitors work, when I have before?

I was running an HP ze5170 laptop and a 2001fp...

Just bought a Dell 8400 with a 17" LCD, and can't get dual monitors working. I run the blue VGA cord to the 17" no prob, but when I go to Control Panel/Display/Settings and try to get the 2001fp up, I get black screen as soon as I plug it in with the white digital cord.

Please PM me if you can help me figure this out... I'll transfer someone $20 or $40 if it takes a little effort. I dropped $800 at 5/10 6max yesterday since I pretilted myself 'cuz I was pissed I didn't have two functional monitors... I gotta take care of this soon.

Dan

If you bought it new from Dell, recently; then call Dell -- you are entitled to that....

did u configure the new monitor for the proper input? the button to the right of the leftmost green lcd on your monitor cycles thru the possible inputs, (there are 4.) make sure that it is dvi, and not dsub, if your using the white cable.

Yup... I'm going to try what 2easy said, and see if that works. I change the settings to 16x1200 for the secondary Plug 'n Play (2001fp) while I just have the primary plugged in, but I get black screen on both as soon as I jack the 2001fp in.

--right click your desktop on whichever monitor is working
--hit the settings tab
--do you have two blue boxes labeled "1" and "2"?
--below the resolution slider make sure you are checking the box to "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor"
--you can drag and drop the boxes to switch which is which side and chane the "Extend..." box selection to determine which is primary.

Also, make sure the 2001fp is looking for the DVI connection, it is by default on D-sub.

I'm lazy, so I'm going to thank Climber and Busterslacks in one thread... changing from D-sub to DVI before I did the stuff was the key thing. I chose dual monitors from the 17", popped the white cable into the 2001fp, and the enabled the 17" from the big boy. Awesome.

Now I can 8 table all my cryptos this weekend before the WPC. wOOt!

Thanks guys...

Also, two things:

1) if the 17 inch says it supports 1280 x 1024, running it at 1600 x 1200 is monitor suicide, yeah?

2) when I get another 2001fp, can I go dual DVI without buying a VGA-DVI adapter? I have a Radeon x300 series video card.
