Default Party 1/2 : AA - do we wait for turn?

Party Poker 1/2 Hold'em (9 max, 9 handed) internettexasholdem.com

Preflop: Hero is CO with Ad, As.
UTG calls, 1 fold, MP1 calls, 2 folds, Hero raises, Button calls, SB calls, 1 fold, UTG calls, MP1 calls.

Flop: (11 SB) 8d, 2d, 9h (5 players)
SB checks, UTG checks, MP1 checks, Hero bets, Button folds, SB folds, UTG calls, MP1 calls.

Turn: (7 BB) Jd (3 players)
UTG checks, MP1 checks, Hero bets, UTG calls, MP1 calls.

River: (10 BB) 7c (3 players)
UTG checks, MP1 checks, Hero bets, UTG calls, MP1 calls.

Final Pot: 13 BB

UTG showed 65 of clubs for the win.

My question is should I have checked the flop and waited for turn so I could make a BB to make drawing for a gutshot a mistake. His call on the flop was no mistake as he was getting about 10:1 odds on his draw.

I just didn't want to let a stupid free card come and let someone runner runner a two pair with rags.

UTG called on the turn even though from his perspective (1) the 7d was a very dirty out for him, and (2) if one of his opponents holds a ten, his gutshot is worthless.

I think you played it fine. You got your value bets in, but your hand got chased down.

There is definately a time and a place for chopping down the odds but I dont think this is one of them.

Value betting on the flop as you did makes a lot more sense, you have a redraw to the nut flush if a diamond hits on the turn as well, you played this one fine.

Checking the flop would be horrible.

In general, two things about "waiting for the turn":

1. It really only applies to situations when we're deciding between calling and raising, not betting or checking. Letting everyone draw for free is so much worse than letting then draw for one bet we need to bet.

2. It generally only applies to hands that are MUCH more vulnerable than your AA here: particularly hands vulnerable to many overcards or on three-straight or three-flush boards.

I wouldn't even wait for the turn here if someone had bet into you. Also, that guy was calling two bets on the turn because he is awesome.
