Default 88 with a crappy flop

Im curious to see how you guys feel about how I played this hand. Im trying to learn the right balance of not being afraid to get value out of mid pairs in scary flops without going too overboard. Thanks.

CO was 62/24/0.75 over 25hands, and I didnt really pick up any tendencies from him.

You don't even beat the flop. And you call the river bet =(

agreed. there's no reason to call the river here.

i would likely check/fold the turn here and just let him have it.

I agree with Bob, id check/fold the turn. But a turn bet is not a big mistake, if it is one. He could easily have any Ax and didnt care about the small bet to see the turn.

After his call though, I put him on QT and check/fold the river.

Though the more i think about it. If you and the villain have had alot of standoffs recently, the river isn't a huge mistake. I'd prefer a bet/fold to a check/call though.

Normally against people that arent as loose as this guy, I would bet the flop and if he calls, I would check/fold the turn or river.

But against this person I felt there was a decent chance that he had nothing on the river. Should I have just planned to check/fold the turn after he called the flop bet(assuming I didnt pick up any previous tendencies)?

I'm not condoning a fold everytime with this type of opponent: I have seen plenty of passive guys call all the way, miss, and then bet the river when checked to. Since they are so straightforward, they're holdings are almost transparent.

For this reason, you can easily continue to bet, even on the river and re-evaluate when he re-raises (on any street, usually let go). It's very like he has a smaller PP than you, be on a draw with Qx, Jx, or Ax.

However, that board is too damn scary for a passive player to bluff at AFTER you re-raise preflop and then continue aggression, and especially with the 9 pairing. There's no way you're gonna give him credit for the nine, he knows this, and he knows that you like your hand and are willing to showdown, yet, he still bets. I don't see how you can be ahead a positive number of times after he bets the river.

Love/hate relationship with these types. Of course theyre huge donators and the reason we can make money doing this nonsense but its frustrating to get called down against a better hand. You just need to wait until you know you have a hand thats worth pumping into these fellows.

I agree with the others that after he calls the flop chances are youre done. A turn fold would probably be best, however, a bet isnt all that out-right. But after he calls that you have to bail on the river.

If you decide to play the turn (which is not a great idea against this player and with the pot odds you get) then you have to go to showdown. Isn't that right?

The way the hand was played, I think it's worth betting the river, folding to a raise.

But I guess this hand illustrates how important the fold at river stat is.
