Re: 88 with a crappy flop
Why do you bet the turn?
1.To take the pot 2.To draw to a set 3.You think that enough times you are ahead If it's mostly 3 (you don't expect a apssive player to fold too often and drawing to a set well...) then why fold the river? (Just asking-not saying I'm definitely right) |

Re: 88 with a crappy flop
so you don't think he'll have a gutter or naked ace enough to continue past the turn? If he had a J or Q that you beat it would be J8 or Q8 or less which I guess is sort of unlikely, but it was a cutoff open. If you bet the turn against this player I think you need to call this river though as thats a great card to bluff a busted gutter. What do you think?

Re: 88 with a crappy flop
He could easily be on some sort of draw here if he is a loose player who opened in the CO to perhaps try to pick up the blinds, I would say he doesnt have a K, because he prob would have raised at least by the turn to test out his hand strength. I would say he has an Ax type of hand and you may still be good. A jack or queen is a very obcious possibility but if he raised with a j or q, you might be looking at him to have paired the 10 as well...
I would have check called the river although a close second is betting the river here because you may have some fold equity and Im almost positive the river card didnt help his hand, and he wasnt strong enough to raise you in the first place. cdl |

Re: 88 with a crappy flop
CO had Qh 7d and so I took down the pot.
I posted this hand because it made me think that I might be losing too many pots to scary boards when I plan to check/fold with a mid pair. Opponent just "chases" with overcards and waits to see if I show weakness, then takes it down with a bet if I check. When I look at the way I played that hand now, it looks horrible. But at that time, it felt right to check/call the river. Perhaps I noticed the villain taking the pot down with a bet a couple of times after another opponent checked the river and showed weakness; I really don't remember. I felt there was a decent chance he just had Ax/Qx. Next time I feel someone just has overcards or Ax, I will consider the bet/fold instead of check/call on the river. Or just be willing to check/fold the turn/river so I dont throw away money when Im obviously beat. Thanks for the comments guys. |
