the surefire losers of the slots or video poker.

[/ QUOTE ]

slots yes... but video poker? VP routinely has house edges of < 0.5% and that's assuming you don't engage in any doubling. If you do, you can decrease it even further. When VP doubling counts towards bonus wagering, VP is often the best game in the house, easily beating blackjack and pontoon.

I think you are right. If I buy a book and it has long words in it I then have to buy a dictionary. More EV lost

You should have qualified your statement. If you buy the book and did not know the game was -EV but then found out it was after reading the book and then chose to not play the game it almost certainly saved you more money than you would have lost had you played the -EV game in the first place. This makes purchasing the book a very +EV decision.

To elaborate, even if you still choose to play the -EV game but you rely on the book to make the least -EV bets then purchasing the book was again a +EV decision. I can see very few times where purchasing a book on a -EV game would in reality be -EV.

I think this is a really important point. We have to keep in mind that most people who play -EV games aren't expecting to beat the casino. Their just trying to have a good time and if they win it's a bonus. A book that teaches BJ basic strategy for example would enable you to maximize your fun and minimize your costs.
