Cheap convertibles are kinda scary. It's not easy to make a convertible that works well (stays warm in the winter, doesn't allow rain in, decent trunk space). If this will be your main source of transportation I'd look for something a little more practical.

I think a Civic is probably the way to go as well. Or a Jetta if those are still under 20k.

Civic = meh. You can get an Impreza for under $20k and you can also get a Mazda 3. Both are better than a civic (the Impreza is the standout best). The civic's not a bad buy, it's just that there are better out there.

Back in grad school I was faced with the same decision. Buy a cheaper car and pay cash or buy a nicer car and face payments. I went the cheaper route, bought a Civic and didn't look back. Later on I had plenty of opportunities to upgrade to something bigger and nicer but not having car payments is so awesome that I sucked it up, kept the extra money and just bought an old muscle car for the fun times. Now I drive 120 miles per day to work and my little Civic keeps giving me 35ish MPG in rain, snow or whatever.

Cheers,

Swede
