They're actually quite common, although you hardly see them used for any commercial flying - it's a great cheap plane for weekend recreational use. Honestly if I were to learn to fly all over again, I would have taken lessons in the cub; it teaches you so much a standard trainer (Cessna et al) can't accomplish.

Recently for kicks I've been flying the Aviat Husky - it's like a J-3 on steroids, and you can easily land it on less than 400 feet.
