Utilizing the Overbet

Hero has been at this 6max 200 table for about 100 hands. Villain has $375, I cover slightly. Villain has been somewhat aggressive preflop and postflop as well. He doesn't seem dumb, but I think I can outmanuever him if need be.

2 folds, villain raises to $7, 2 folds, I call in bb with 7 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 8 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

Flop ($14) is 6 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 5 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 8 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

I lead for $10 into him and get just a call. He could have a wide range of hands here, but we'll see.

Turn ($33) 8 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

I bet $20 into him as I now think I have the best hand for sure and he will call with draws and overpairs. I assume he might slowplay a boat here on the slim chance he has one.

River ($63) 8 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

I think for about 2 seconds and push for $350....

I like it but the problem is, he will probably fold the straight if he was somehow slowplaying it. The only call u will get from a decent player is pocket 99-AA

If villian is "aggressive" he's not on a draw, because he would have more than likely pushed on you on the flop. He probably doesn't want to go broke with his overpair

villian is probably (in my mind anyway) calling you down with a big pocket pair. That being said, I still don't like this push. I'd rather bet a small amount(block bet) and have him push for me.

I like it, and I don't see that as a problem. I don't mind giving up a little bit of EV against a straight if it allows me to gain a huge amount of EV from a pocket pair.

And usually I can't profitably call this preflop, but I suppose it can be done in certain situtions.

since villain was preflop raiser, straight is rather unlikely here.

I'll tell you what his range is: Flush draw, overpair.

I'm thinking about making a post about how great incorporating the overbet into your game can be.

This really depends on your image at the table.

Heh, well by just saying "overpair" it makes it look like a small range. But there's lotsa overpairs incorporated into that title.

I posted this because I think the huge overbet is underutilized and misused at small stakes especially. There are times when it is just dumb as only a better hand will call and worse will fold, but I thought this was a good spot for it. I didn't even think that it was very likely for villain to call (maybe around 25%), but if he does I am usually doubling my stack on quads. If he folds, I have confused the hell out of him and he might tilt his stack towards me later on.
