Default Finally...... (trip report, very long)

I have not seen one of these posted but 1800 insists I make one, so here goes.

Last night I finally won my Atlantis seat. I'm usually an NL guy, but some of you may remember my posts from about three weeks ago asking about the double shootouts. You may also remember my subsequent posts bemoaning the fact that I came 2nd on the first table seven times with no shots at the final table.

This has come as a big relief, I have spent quite a lot on these sats, and it had gotten to the point where I couldn't now really justify buying in, yet after falling short again in the $650 this Saturday, really didn't think I was ever going to win.

Without further ado, on to the hands.

First Table

I'm pretty dismayed to see The Camel to my immediate left but it turns out we don't play any pots together.

About 20 hands in I open JTs in LP, two callers, I whiff flop, SB fires into me and I fold. Apart from that I haven't played a hand, playing very tight and generally card dead.

Hand 45 - T1355. 25/50, 6 left. CO opens to 200, SB calls, I shove 77 from the BB and they both turbo muck.

Hand 58 - T1605. 25/50, 6 left. CO limps, i complete J9, BB checks. J52r, I lead 300 and Camel moves in 400 more from the BB. I am not very pleased but relieved to see he has J6. Up to T2505.

We're down to 5 now, I open A7s from CO, button moves in and I fold. Then I get a walk in the BB and shove after a limper w/ AQ to take down the pot. I generally shove a lot in these things because I'm not as familiar with post-flop play in tournaments.

With 4 left on hand 93, stacks look like this :

Seat 3: mstars09 (5225 in chips)
Seat 4: gatto99954 (3150 in chips)
Seat 6: smugor (2355 in chips)
Seat 8: trader13 (2770 in chips)

I am smugor. Anyway, that hand at 75/150 I pick up AA. Button limps, SB completes, I make it 450 more, both fold. Bleh, maybe shoulda gone a bit less.

Anyway, they continue to fight it out amongst themselves and another one busts out. I'm stealing the blinds a bit more now. I now have 3900 and they have 4800 apiece. They are both pretty weak tight. It will emerge that the guy I get HU with folds his blind, and his button, waaaay too much.

Then this hand comes up :

Button (t4770)
SB (t4875)
Hero (t3855)

Preflop: Hero is BB with K[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 9[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].

River: (t3600) A[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets t2055 (All-In), SB folds.

Final Pot: t5655

Standard for some of you, perhaps, but this was a pretty ballsy move for me and gave me a great confidence boost.

I'm now at T5600 and the chipleader for the first time.

Ten hands and a failed steal attempt later I'm down to T3280 and now flapping a bit. I get KK again and only get the SB. Damn.

Hand 132 - T2880, 100/200, 3 left. I open QQ to 600, BB calls. KJ8, chk chk. K, chk chk. T, 400 call. He has A high.

Another blind steal gets called in both spots and I totally whiff the flop.

Hand 140 - T2980, 100/200, 3 left. Button minraises, I make it 1200 total from the SB w/ black TT, he calls. AK6ccc, I shove he folds. Shoulda just stuck it in preflop.

Hand 144 - T4000, 100/200, 3 left. I open 99 to 600, BB calls. J53hh, chk 800, he minraises me, I fold. Down to T2600.

I win a smallish pot in the blinds and then start shoving w/ JJ and TT. I'm back up to 4k with some breathing room.

Flop: (t2050) 6[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)

Hero bets t1842 and is allin, Button folds.

Whoop. Up to a high of T6600 now.

Hand 169 - 100/200a25, 3 left. Tightish button minraises. SB calls, I call K9o.
958dd, I bet 600. BB folds, SB calls.
7o, I put him in for his last 1800, he thinks a while and folds.

He then busts out a few hands later w/ K6 v the other guy's K7.

HU! I have 7800 to his 5800.

I quickly realise that this guy is way too tight. Blinds are up to 400/800 now and he is folding to any raise in the BB, and folding his button probably more than half the time. I quickly run over him up to 10.5k v 3k. He limps on button, I shove KJo, he has AKo. Ugh.

He now actually starts to mix up his play and push over some of my loose raises. I actually find myself down at 4k at one point. I quickly get back even and with blinds still at 400/800, I shove ATo. I should have made it 3x here as he will practically never call to see a flop but will shove worse holdings than he'll call a push with.

Anyway, he calls w/ 66. I win. Not the best HU performance ever but it feels so good to finally win one.

Our game finished a good 30 mins after everyone else.

Final table to follow....

The Camel is a monkey at real poker; which probably means he's a successful tournament player, so point taken.

Just imagine you are slumming it at $200 nl ring.

Nice report.

Final Table

The final table obviously seemed a lot tougher. When we got short there were very few opportunities to open push my short stack. nite404 for the most part played a very nice tournament.

Anyway, I don't know many names, but PGA71 and bet2win were at my table, and seeing as I recognise both of them, I assumed they were pretty good.

There were actually a couple of donks, but nite404 took care of them pretty quickly, finding himself at 4k within about 20 hands.

I actually get AA and KK very early on, and pick up some dead money in raises, no postflop action as yet but it bumps me up nicely to 1700.

That quickly diminishes with some missed pocket pairs. The game is moving very fast, and LP is taking the blinds every hand.

On hand 38, stacks look like this :

Seat 1: nite404 (3505 in chips)
Seat 2: PGA71 (1400 in chips)
Seat 3: bet2win (4080 in chips)
Seat 4: Predator13 (600 in chips)
Seat 5: pokeyman (1060 in chips)
Seat 7: smugor (1700 in chips)
Seat 8: Reraiseallin (1155 in chips)

nite404 and bet2win are bossing at the moment. Everyone else seems to be doing the same as me, playing pretty tight and waiting for hands.

Hand 39 - T1700, 15/30, AA in the BB. nite404 opens to 80 (again!) from EP, SB calls. I make it 160 more, SB calls this time.
T43r, he chk folds to my 325.

PGA71 seems to have been card dead throughout. It's still bet2in and nite404 duking it out. The rest of the guys seem quiet.

I miss a bet in a small pots in the blinds. I'm a bit miffed. The next hand I play is Hand 70 :

Hand 70 - T1730, 25/50, 6 left. I open AxTh from UTG+1. CO and BB(nite404) call.
KJ9hh, chk chk 150, fold fold.

Ugh, that felt terrible.

I open 66 a few hands later with T1430 and get minraised by nite. First time I've seen him do this. Ugh, down to 1130.

PGA then gets busted by bet2win in a small pot. Down to 5.

Stacks :

Seat 1: nite404 (4845 in chips)
Seat 3: bet2win (3865 in chips)
Seat 5: pokeyman (1300 in chips)
Seat 7: smugor (980 in chips)
Seat 8: Reraiseallin (2510 in chips)

This very hand bet2win puts in 1500 preflop v nite404 and chk folds the A55 flop.

Then, the next hand, he runs his AT against nite's KJ in a 5330 pot and loses. Brutal.

Stacks are now :

Seat 1: nite404 (8760 in chips)
Seat 5: pokeyman (1300 in chips)
Seat 7: smugor (980 in chips)
Seat 8: Reraiseallin (2460 in chips)

4th gets $65. 3rd gets $650. At this point my hopes of winning are pretty slim. Normally I wouldn't care about sneaking into the money, but seeing as I'm having a torrid time at NL lately, plus the fact that it's pretty hard for me to deposit at Stars sees me eyeing the $650 longingly.

At this point nite404 is playing a superb game, and punishing the short stacks as you would expect.

About 5 hands into 4-handed I get AT against the buttons A9 and it holds up. Up to T1500 and cruising!

On the rare occasions it's folded to me I'm doing a pretty good job of shoving anything playable.

I fall back to 900 and keep shoving valiantly. Both of the other shorties have survived an allin against nite, much to my dismay.

I now shove 3 hands in a row which gets me back to T1660.

Now for the biggy. Hand 127 :

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t150 (4 handed) pokerhand.org hand converter

UTG (t6345)
Button (t2995)
Hero (t1660)
BB (t2500)

Preflop: Hero is SB with 4[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 4[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img].
2 folds, Hero raises to t1660, BB calls t1510.

Flop: (t3320) Q[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], T[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)

Turn: (t3320) 3[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 players)

River: (t3320) 4[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)

Final Pot: t3320

Wow. Maybe I actually have a shot after all.

Reraise doubles up quite quickly with AA.

Hand 133 - T3095, 75/150. I open A3ss from UTG to 450. BB calls and has 1250 left.
Q59hh, chk, I bet 750, he folds.
Phewwwww! Had no idea what to do here. I was gonna cry and call his last 500 if he pushed.

nite404's grip has been loosened at this point after losing many of the allin situations v the other two short stacks. He opens to 450 the next hand from the button, and SB shoves 655 more. He goes into the tank! Oh god, he is really weak. He calls w/ 42o and outruns A3.

Down to 3.

Seat 1: nite404 (7825 in chips)
Seat 7: smugor (3470 in chips)
Seat 8: Reraiseallin (2205 in chips)

I fold the first 5 hands or so then get AK and put Reraise allin (hah!). He folds.

I have not been opening much at all throughout this final table against nite's BB. I know if I do it sparingly I should be ok. I take it down w/ Q5.

Hand 142 - Reraise shoves UTG with blinds at 75/150. I make what at the time seemed a pretty loose call for 1300 more with A6o. I get lucky again and it holds up.

HU!

Seat 1: nite404 (7750 in chips)
Seat 7: smugor (5750 in chips)

This was a pretty slow and controlled HU match. Blinds at 100/200, the standard hand went, SB completes, BB checks. SB checks flop, BB bets 200, SB folds.

Very early on I raised his limp to 800 w/ ATo, he shoved. I didn't do that again until we got to the end and I could shove comfortably.

Hand 156 - He completes, I chk A9o.
AA3, chk 200 call.
T, chk chk
9, 600 call.

He had JT. We are now even in chips!

I miss a gutshot on one hand, then in the next make a bad river call for 600 with 98 on a 2Q8Q7 board, after the flush got there on the river. I'm pretty annoyed at that.

He now leads 8300 - 5200.

I checkraise an A-high flop and he 3-bets. Ugh. Down to 4200.

I win a couple of small pots and get back to 5100 when this happens :

55, he completes, i chk.
643h, I bet 400 he calls.
5h, I chk call 1k.
To, chk chk

MHIG, he had Q4. Even in chips again.

Because I've been limping basically every hand, I'll throw in the odd raise once in a while, but pretty rarely. He folds to these without hesitation.

He's up 7700 - 5800. I call his standard 200 on the flop and donk-bet the turn with nothing, he folds.

Back to 6200. Now I start to notice a pattern. Occasionally he'll CR me on the flop, usually minraise, and usually on A-high flops. This time I call with my flush draw. Turns out he'll then check-fold the turn to a healthy bet nearly every time. Cool.

I limp AQ, he chks. 523ss, chk, i bet 200, he makes it 400 more. Ugh. He means business this time. I fold, annoyed.

He leads 7300-6200.

I have A4o in BB. He completes.
T44r, I bet 200, he makes it 400 more, I call.
J, chk chk
J, 800 fold

Bah. I now have my biggest lead yet though, 7k - 6.5k.

Hand 186 - still 100/200.
I complete KTo, he checks.
AJ6r, chk, I bet 200, he makes it 400 more, I call.
4o, he chk folds to my 800.

I lead 7600 to 5900, but lose 600 when I call his 200 bet on the turn w/ A3 on J929, then 400 more on the river Q. He has Q5. Ugh!

Now comes the biggest hand of the tournament.

Still 100/200. He has 7200, I have 6300.

He completes, I chk K4o.
K54ss, chk, 200, I make it 600 more he calls pretty fast.
2o, I bet 1400. He thinks a long time and calls.
Js, I check, he bets 3200.

I have 700 left if I call. I am pretty pissed off with that river card, but this doesn't make sense, he thought for ages on the turn before calling. If he stalled like that with a flush draw then it worked.

I half-optimistically call. He has K8o and I drag the 11.2k pot. Yes!!!!!

He has 1600 left and I'm half regretting not throwing the rest in on the last hand.

I shove A9 the very next hand, he has QQ.

'plz ace plz ace plz ace plz ace just this once'
flop AA4,
'NO Q! NO Q! NO Q! NO Q!'
turn Q,
'OMG FU'
river blank.

Hearts pounding and I can't believe it. 10300 v 3200. I try to stay calm.

Next hand he completes, I have 5c2c. 984ccc, I cr him, he folds.

I fold 29o.

I fold J6dd to his minraise.

I call 94ss and fold to his 200 bet on the flop.

10150 v 3350 still.

He completes, I chk T6.
A7T, i chk call 200.
6, chk, he bets 600, I move allin, he folds fastish.

11175 v 2325 now.

I get A9cc again and shove. He has AJo. OMG. We chop, phew.

99. He completes I put him in he folds.

He folds his SB, I fold my SB.

I have K6s, he shoves, I fold.
I complete 53cc, he shoves, I fold.

He completes, I chk 93o.
KK8dd, I chk call his 200 looking to pull a move on a later street. Pretty dumb, yep.
To, chk chk
5d, I bet 600. He thinks forever. I can hardly look. He folds. Phew!

11250 v 2250 now.

I shove Jd5d, he folds.

He shoves, I call 1800 more with Qh9h. Pretty debatable but he's been getting frisky lately and this might be the best hand. I really want to end this thing.

He has K6o.

A63h
Jh
Q!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yesssssssssss! It's 4am and I am so so happy. It's a wonderful feeling.

Good luck to everyone in their sats and at Atlantis.

I skimmed this, I want to go through more slowly, but this stood out at me:

I would call this if he had 2300 chips and 200/400 blinds. Not sure what I'd do if they were still 100/200 though.

Great report though. Grats!

Blinds were 100/200 to the end. If I'm gonna fold that I should probably fold Qh9h, but it's soooo pretty
