Default Football Food

The NFL season is about to get underway! I was able to implement a rule in my house for Vikings game days. It's been in place for years and works well for me.

Game days we will have 'Football' appetizers and food.

Some of the things I make on these days include:

Buffalo wings, Brats, Sloppy Joes, Hormel chili and Nacho cheese chip dip, homemade chili, grilled mini-cheeseburgers and french fries, homemade soft pretzels with rock salt and mustard.

Things my wife doesn't get a vote for on game day include: Salmon or any fish except hot and spicy grilled shrimp, any kind of salad (chicken, tuna, veggie), 'good for your health' food, most gourmet recipe stuff we dabble in on other days.

We have some fun with this. But I need more ideas for game day food. Especially good appetizers. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Oh and one more thing ... Go Purple!

Yes. You have to come up with something better than that. Very...

Despite growing up in Wisconsin snd being motal enemies with anyone remotely associated with the Vikings, I had similar rituals as I was growing up. I still grill brats and burgers pretty much every football Sunday.

In terms of appetizers, one glaring omission is pickled herring on Ritz crackers. The Kaukauna brand Port Wine cheese spread is also very good on a Ritz. Another standard in my house is Ruffles potato chips with Dean's french onion dip.

For the record, I think Moss leaving was a positive thing for the Vikings. Good luck this season. Go Packers.

Potato skins. You know, load them up with cheese and bacon bits.
