There was a story on the news today about rescuing some baby ducks who had fallen through a grate.

It made me think of these photos (which are rather old).

ohh... that so sad. I hate to think of all the ducks that die that way each year. (when someone isn't watching or it's dry down there)

I can't imagine its too many. What are the odds that a duck leads little ducks across a grate?

I don't know, but it's not like storm drains/grates are incredibly rare.

That is true; but they don't often share the same neighborhoods as ducks, so they?

In Indiana, almost every suburb I know of has retention ponds. The storm drains lead to the pond so unless they are killed in the fall, can't navigate in the dark , or get stuck in debri in the drain, they should be ok. The retention ponds attract ducks/geese like a magnet. Heck the swimming pool in my parent's backyard is visited by the same ducks every year. Last year they had about a dozen baby ducks. There is a storm drain in my yard (which is 2 acres in size) that leads to a large reservoir/lake. It's about a 1 mile journey to the lake from my house.

In Cape Cod, there are storm drains/ducks all over the place.

So my guess is yes, they often do share the same neighborhood. I'm not sure there's much you can do, it's just kind of a sad way to go. That's all I'm saying. In that picture previously posted, you know that mom duck is looking at it's baby duck and the baby duck is looking up at the mom but...

Sad way to go. And those ducks are smart enough to know whats going on.

I'm thinking about every drain and every duck on the planet and wondering how often this happens.

Don't worry, I'm not gettin emotional or anything. Animals die, it's part of nature, I'm just wondering how often it happens.
