Default big surfing waves at mavericks

at half moon bay the surfing waves are huge for some reason. 30 feet or more. if you are near there it would be great to go watch. it is out there so bring long eyes with you. its fun to be there anyway.

Mavs is a very cool break. pretty good fishing and foraging around that area. halibut, rockcod, ling cod, perch, dunginess crab and even salmon are caught from shore off of the jetty in there.
pretty hairy waves, though. that's the spot where Mark Foo died a few years ago. just shows that, no matter how good a waterman you are, the ocean is always stronger and demands your respect.

I heard it was way bigger today. The conditions were supposedly pretty tame by mavericks standards for the contest.

Wish I could go out there. Next time I am in the Bay Area I am going to make it a point to go. Last time around, I went to Monterrey Bay instead. Is his near the town of Half Moon Bay or ?. Is Pillar Point worth seeing also. I want to fish out there also.

Hint: look up fetch, Ray. Ok, Fetch - Distance over which wave-forming wind blows. So, you can have relative calm near shore but winds in other parts of the ocean over a large fetch producing big waves that will eventually hit the beach. See that?

Glad I could teach you something today, Ray. And it wasn't all drivel either. In fact, this knowledge could help you win a bar bet some day.

Sounds like you are enjoying yourself mighty well.

M2d,

Do you need a fishing license to ocean fish (surf fish) in California? I assume so, at least for some species. I want to head out there someday with fishing gear and give it a go.

If you are on a public pier or jetty, you can fish without a license, otherwise, you need one. We also have this silly rule that it has to be displayed above the waist.

The big surf contest was last Wednesday. They call people in the night before from all over the world (I don't know the results but I'll be down at the brew company tomorrow night to find out). I live maybe a mile away and can see it when I walk down the street (on a 150 foot cliff). It was good times as always with beautiful weather. I was just hanging out on the cliff above with some friends enjoying it.

The waves were good today as well. They were 30-40 feet again and not a cloud in the sky. Awesome.
