I don't think the unranked team would ever be a home team in a tournament situation.

It happens once in a while in conference tournaments. For example, I think a few years back St Johns hosted the Big East tournament and this situation came up. It was one of those situations where they felt the only way they could make the big tournament was to win the conference tournament and they just happened to be hosting it. I agree that it would probably never happen during March Madness though.

I found out early on that there are just too many other factors that affect these types of games for the trend to work the way it's supposed to. Also, Joe Public is much more informed when this happens which cuts into the value added.
