Nirvana is debatable, but not the smiths. A lot of the hipster type crowd really digs them.

I think they're both pretty good examples of bands that get maintream (RS/Spin) critical praise, maintream success, and yet still get praised in like pitchfork (which, lets face it, has a pretty big say in what is indie cool).

agreed, although they did have one or two good songs. Too bad, Moressey was a fantastic (although androgynous) front man but the band still sucked.

Interesting to see how Moressey went from new romantic to plastic gangster with his new 40-something look.
