Default 2001FPs, Ebay and the UK

Has any UK based 2+2er out there tried buying a 2001fp from the states on ebay?

Just wondering if you got hit for any customs charges and if so how much? looking at the ebay price + shipping, seems you can get one for about half the UK retail price from Dell this way, but it seems just a bit too easy . . . .

Any advice from anyone who's tried this way of obtaining a 2001FP at a reasonable price would be most welcome!

TIA

Mat

I had one sent to Canada, and I had to pay $200 in duties. Im not sure what the UK will charge, but I would imagine something close to that. You could have them write that the item is valued at $49 to avoid duties, but that could be risky as you would only be covered for $49 in shipping insurance. GL

I just sold 2 2405fpws to the UK from the US, I said the value was $50 a piece on the customs form. It worked.

Were they new or used ones? Can see that working a bit more if they were used!

Also - just in case you weren't aware, under UK law, if a Customs form is filled in fraudulently, "the importer", ie your buyer could be held criminally liable if the fraud was discovered and may face a fairly hefty fine, along with a criminal record and all the joy that entails.

Hence I'd rather do the import all above board and pay any duty due

I didn't pick up any extra charges from Customs when I bought mine, although its a risk you take with any purchase.

Most Ebay sellers specialising in US to UK sales seem to have ways to minimise the risk.

I got mine sent from the US and they charged me about 120 GBP for taxes! I dont think there is any way to get around this. I send that one back and bought mine for 380 gbp from ebay uk. I'm sure you can find it around 300 pounds at the british ebay if you keep looking.

i got mine about a year ago now for £300 incuding postage from the US.

again, they just printed a lower value on the outside of the box and therefore no taxes for me to pay.

Had one of mine sent from the US with a customs note describing it as 'trade show sample' with a value of $25. Didn't pay any taxes on it.

Eh, I used to do a shitload of eBay sales to Canada and the UK.

The solution is to claim no value or <$50 on the customs form, and insure through a third party package insurance companym like U-PIC.

Of course, the receiver is the one liable if customs figures it out, but I always asked a head of time if they were ok with it, and 98% did it.
