Default Is this dumb?

$10 NLHE SNG on Stars. 4 left. Been that way since 25/50. It is now 100/200 with ante.

Here I play KQo from UTG for a raise to 4x BB and I die. Here is the nitty gritty.

Seat 2: jon_1van (2204 in chips)
Seat 5: ONE NEEDS (6544 in chips)
Seat 6: DollarStore (2514 in chips)
Seat 8: MissedTurn (2238 in chips)

ONE NEEDS: posts small blind 100
DollarStore: posts big blind 200

*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to jon_1van [Kd Qc]
MissedTurn: folds
jon_1van: raises 600 to 800
ONE NEEDS: calls 700
DollarStore: folds
*** FLOP *** [6d Th Kc]
ONE NEEDS: checks
jon_1van: bets 1379 and is all-in
ONE NEEDS: calls 1379
*** TURN *** [6d Th Kc] [3c]
*** RIVER *** [6d Th Kc 3c] [4d]
*** SHOW DOWN ***
ONE NEEDS: shows [Kh Ah] (a pair of Kings)
jon_1van: shows [Kd Qc] (a pair of Kings - lower kicker)
ONE NEEDS collected 4658 from pot

Since it was 4 handed I figured KQo is good for a raise.

Is this dumb?

If you assume you raise this hand I can't imagine a difference in my play that would have changed the outcome.

For some reason I think that position could/should come into play when deciding how to best play this hand. If anyone has a few pointers about this I would greatly appreciate them.

Not dumb at all.

You're on the button with a hand with good high-card strength. You should probably expect to pick up the blinds much of the time. You get called, rats,
but hit top pair, yay. All-in.

I might even raise all-in to begin with, since it's only a 10BB raise; the reason being that I don't want to have to think about folding to a reraise. Going all-in prevents someone playing back at you on a bluff.

You'll win this pot one way or another a huge amount of the time. You got unlucky to run into AK.

Guy.

You're the short stack (ok, not by much), so you can't just wait around for the other guys to bust. Blind stealing is too important to be laying down a hand like KQ. This is a pretty big hand 4-handed. You met with a hand that dominated you. Whatcha gonna do? Most of us would have played it much the same and busted out, too.

Thank You for your responses.

I don't want this post to come off as a "poor me" post. I am relatively new and I know that you have to try to mix it up short handed and short stacked. I also know that this seems to be the most unpredicatable part of the tourney and any additional finese' (spelling ??) could potentially show good rewards. So, again, if anyone thinks position effects this please let me know. If you know position has nothing to do with that helps too.

Does anyone think it would have been terrible to limp and fold to substantial reraise (giving you the chance to dump an easily dominated KQ). Doing this risks allowing the blinds in.

I'm very torn between knowing I need to be raising/stealing, and trying to not overplay hands that are easy to dominate.

You are destined to lose your chips here. Call it force majure, bad luck, whatever.

If you start limping (or, God forbid, FOLDING) K/Q utg 4 handed late in a tournament (short stacked or not), just quit.

Maybe one of the brainiac computer guys around here can tell us the odds of our hero running into A/K, A/Q, A/A, K/K, or Q/Q here. I think you'll find the numbers to your liking and feel just fine about your play here.

P.S. Note that your opponent's playing style (right or wrong) is what actually cost you all your chips. Had he pushed allin after your preflop raise, you could at least have considered folding (although with almost 40% of your chips in, you might not want to consider folding). I dunno. Anyway, I would have put you allin preflop in that situation.
