Default Harry Reid throws down the gauntlet, Bush should accept the challenge

FILIBUSTER PRISCILLA

According to Senate sources, Democratic Leader Harry Reid has informed Majority Leader Bill Frist that Federal Appeals Court Judge Priscilla Owen will be filibustered if President Bush names her to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court.

Republican senators are divided on whether former Texas Supreme Court Justice Owen is vulnerable because she underwent a filibuster for the appellate seat and was confirmed under the compromise agreement. Frist is known to believe Owen can be confirmed in the face of a filibuster.

Republican Senate strategists believe Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is the only possible Bush nominee to replace O'Connor who would not face a filibuster.

Its gotta be Gonzolas man. Did you see that clip where he said "all options were on the table" but then made a quip about how he was looking straight at the AG.

Pricilla Owens would cause a civil war, what a terrible choice.

If Bush "stays the course" then this would be his only option.

This would only be fair for the Democrats to do. After all, the Republicans raised hell in opposing both Ginsburg and Breyer; they ran millions of dollars of attack ads against them; they dug in their garbage to find dirt against them, and the media were brutal in their treatment of Clinton's nominees.

Oh wait..I'm sorry..those are things the Democrats always do against Republican nominees.

Sidestepping the challenge by picking Edith Jones would actually be the best choice. That way if the democrats obstruct her after saying they would block Owens, they will be on record as blocking 2 qualified female judges and won't be able to spin it because so many republicans voted for Ginsburg.

I am a liberal on most issues, and i actually like gonzales a lot, and i think that a more diverse a and moderate court- including justices like roberts and gonzales- is in the best intrests of both the administration and the country.

I do dislike gonzales' opinions on the use of torture an guantanamo, but, realistically, he's the best we're gonna get.

Anyone else feel like this is equivalent to the thought process of an eight year-old?

It is your thought process that marks you as a 20 something mindless Bush-basher whose intellect got stuck in the 7th grade. My post was an example of how strategists in both parties think. Don't feel sad if you don't get it, because so many others don't either.

Boy do we have short memories. While the Republicans ultimately did not block either Ginsberg or Breyer ... they threw hurdles up to just about every other judicial nominee presented by President Clinton, including engaging in, get this, a filibuster:

"In truth, no one should understand the legitimacy of judicial filibusters better than Bill Frist. On March 9, 2000, Frist participated in a filibuster of Richard Paez, President Clinton's nominee to the Ninth Circuit. When confronted about his vote late last year, Frist claimed he filibustered Paez for "scheduling" purposes. Not true. A press release by former Senator Bob Smith titled "Smith Leads Effort to Block Activist Judicial Nominees" plainly states that the intent of the filibuster was to "block" the Paez nomination."
