Default Why Play Limit Omaha/8?

I want to start playing limit omaha/8, because it looks like a fun and profitable game. I was just wondering how most of you guys here on the Omaha/8 forum got into the game? What do you like/dislike about it? How do you think it compares to other poker games?

Buy High-Low-Split Poker by Ray Zee before you jump in with your $50 and you will double it alot faster than just learning as you play. That's how I learned how to play. Well that's how I learned all the games before I played them at a casino or on-line. If I'm losing I want to have a book to help me see why.

Good luck Paul

In omaha, you get 4 cards instead of just 2, so there's twice as many ways to win!!!

Just kidding, of course, but this is the mentality of many players that is at the heart of why omaha is more profitable than hold 'em. There are other advantages, including the absence of schooling among fish (they often share outs, so having more in the pot doesn't hurt your chances of winning). But the primary advantage is that the idiots are at a greater disadvantage because of their misconceptions about the game.

In pot-limit O8, the discrepancy between what the idiots believe and what is reality becomes even more profitable... but I'd say you ought to cut your teeth in limit omaha (this is what I did) and then progress to PLO8 when you feel comfortable.

Good luck, and welcome to the forum!

WRONG.. there are three times as many ways to win! 4 cards = 6 two card holdings

I would suggest starting with the .05/.10 limit O8 games on stars until you have the larger kinks ironed out. Then play party .5/1 limit to iron out the moderate kinks. Then party $25 PLO8 for the final polishing. Wait until you are profitable at every step before continuing.

While not playing you should read books. The two helpful ones that I read were Cappalletti and Ray Zee. They basically say the same thing so for starting out one will be ok.

Good Luck.

Actually in holdem there are 3 ways to win: 2 cards, 1 card only, or the other card only, so O/8 does have twice as many ways to win.

In Hold'em there are 21 ways to choose five cards from the two in your hand and five on the board.

In Omaha there 6 ways to choose two cards from the four in your hand and 10 ways to choose three cards from the five board cards. This results in 60 Omaha hands from a given set of hole and board cards.

I don't think anybody has actually answered your question, so I'll give it a try.

when I first started playing online poker, I played O8 b/c that was the game we played the most in my home game. I felt most comfortable with it.

On 3 separate occasions, I crushed low limit O8 games on Party, and lost my bankroll when moving up to 3/6. I learned that I was good enough to beat terrible opponents at a very high clip, but I wasn't very good myself.

I also learned that while the average O8 player on Party .50/1 is probably worse than the average Hold Em player on Party, there are many many more bad HE players, and they still can be found as you move up levels. Game selection is critical, so I switched to HE.

Low limit O8 is basically an easy game to make money at. You can nut peddle, or near nut peddle. That's about it.

Playing against tough opponents, I think it is harder than HE.

I also think there is more 'action' in HE. Not as much math in HE.

just my .02

I started playing O8 as a change of pace from Hold'em and found that I really enjoy it. I'm much better at Hold'em (I'm still learning O8) so that's what I play when I want to grind out some money, but I like to have a couple of O8 tables going also to help break the monotony a bit. I like O8 because you can have so many different combinations of cards all working together at once. It provides for a new way of reading the flop (e.g., "I have the nut low draw, top pair, a backdoor nut flush draw, and an inside straight draw"). One of my favorite parts of O8 is when I know I have at least part of the pot locked up with the nut low, while freerolling on say a nut flush draw. Jamming the pot in those situations is a lot of fun because I get to gamble on the outcome of the next card but without a significant downside. If my card hits, it's bingo bango bongo. Scooping is my favorite part of O8!
