A few questions on live play in Atlantic City

What a shame if I don't get to play poker. We've been planning a trip to Vegas or AC for such a long time now, and they decide to go when it's only 4 months till I turn 21.

I play mid and high limits at Taj. My experience is that no one gets carded if they are playing 10-20 and higher (signing in at the mid limit podium). You do have a chance of getting carded playing 1-2 NL b/c that is basically "the kids game" and they know the one underage people are most likely to try to play. I don't recommend you play under 21, but I'm not going to get all paternalistic about it. Do what you think is right.

Also, 1000 should be enough, but don't feel pressured to buy in for the max if you're underfunded. Not that big a deal to buy in 200 and give yourself 5 buy-ins instead of 3. Unless you're willing to hit the ATM and have more money, then buying in max is certainly ideal.

Well, it's certainly not ideal, but I won't resign myself to my hotel room without at least trying.

Ok, assuming I don't get carded and do get seated, is there a chance they card me when I'm cashing out? If yes, will they take everything or can I convince them to give me back my initial funds?

I have played with people who looked like they were not a day older than 15 at the Taj. Unless this carding thing is something new, you are fine. My underage buddies have been going and had no problem. Just get your name on the list and don't hang around the podium when waiting for your seat (That is where security usually stands right at the entrance).

It's not a disaster to buy in for $200, but I've bought in short to this game before and I felt quite disadvantaged. Typical flop bets were $100. Typical pre-flop raises were $15. If you start with $200, you're in all-in mode after you see three flops.

Honestly, I wouldn't feel comfortable playing in this game if my whole bankroll was only $1000. In fact I've been there, and my play was very sub-optimal. I was a timid little bitch, and lost my whole buy-in.

But if you're going just to screw around, or just for the experience, then I guess anything is okay.

If they card you, show them your ID like you are 21. Since you are close, they may not do the math, unless it says under 21 until Jan '06. Even then they may not notice.

It is pretty much to screw around and have fun, though I intend to be ahead at the end of my trip. I figure 1000 should be ok as a winning player, I'll just have to get accustomed to the larger bets and more aggressive players.

I mean it's easy to be ultra aggressive online and make smart bluffs when I all you have to do is press a button. I might find live play intimidating and that will certainly make me play worse. I'd play lower stakes if I could, but AC casinos don't offer them.

The Taj only started carding people at the podium about two or so months ago. Prior to that I had never seen anyone in the poker room carded. Either way, you can always try and get your name on the list anyway. If they ask for id say you left it in your hotel room and leave. I have never seen anyone carded when cashing out either btw.

I wouldn't generalize all 1-2 tables as being LAG-tastic and full of maniacs. Some are rock gardens, so pay attention. Much does depend on the time of day and day of the week.
