This year was pretty disappointing for new music, especially compared to last year. Anyway the best album of 2005 is:

Spoon - Gimme Fiction

Honorable mention to:

Doves - Some Cities, and
Giant Drag - Hearts and Unicorns.

Anyway, I often tend to classify albums in my mind not by when they came out, but by when I heard them. In that case the following albums are all ones that I got into this year, but were released earlier (all of these records are far better than anything listed above, or anything in this entire thread):

Autolux - Future Perfect
Blonde Redhead - Misery is a Butterfly
Stereolab - Dots and Loops

No doubt it is kinda of like pandora's box with the internet once you find a band or small genre you like. But finding that one band in a genre like this is alot easier if people around them are listening to it.

people who argue about music and try to tell other people their music 'sucks' and they are stupid for listening to it are idiots. music is all personal preference. how can someone be wrong for liking something like music?

[/ QUOTE ]

Have you read this thread yet? No one has said anything like that. Though audioslave got a few giggles.

Just because the masses like something doesnt make it good. And just because they dont, doesnt make it bad.

[/ QUOTE ]

given that its the only objective way to judge something like this you have to take it into account. What makes the albums you listed good, and why should I believe that they are better than what the masses like?

People like me like Audioslave because it reminds us of the some of the good bands in the nineties that we grew up with. Nostaglia for me.

Attempting to objectify (is that a word?) appreciation of art through a direct correlation with popularity is comically retarded.

how have i never heard of any of these? if they were the best albums of 2005, why wouldn't i hear of them even one time?

[/ QUOTE ]

Because you are ignorant about good music?

[/ QUOTE ]

Don't you think where you live has alot to do with what you are exposed too, granted I can find all of these bands but if no-one in my region is listening to them then I have to be a disadvantage compared to a region where this kind of music is prevelant.

[/ QUOTE ]

dude, if you just casually read rolling stone or spin or EW or any of the national mags like that you would have heard about all of them. sufjan was #1 on one of their charts in the back for what, 3 months? unless you live in siberia or something, you really have no excuse other than a good old fashioned unwillingness to make any effort other than turning on a corporate radio station.

since we have the Murderer's Row of hipsters focusing on this thread, this might be a good time to ask the question that I've been pondering for a while

why are the band names/album titles/song titles so gay nowadays?
