Default pocket pair, flop comes trip 8s..what to do?

Table has been loose passive. avg. vpip 50%, pfr around 4, aggression around 0.5. Villain is CO and unknown as he just sat down.

Doing this from memory

Hero is dealt 77
4 calls including CO, Hero raises, SB calls, BB calls, limpers all call.

Flop comes 888
checks all around to CO who donk bets out. Hero?? What's my line here?

You have to raise...You have the best hand the vast majority of the time, and you wanna protect it against any overcards

Me likes the preflop raise. Variance is your friend. Now you got to raise the flop for even more +EV and variance.

raise, I think you want to limit the feild as much as you can. There are 27 cards in the deck you don't want to see.

I tend to agree on the raise, only because you had no read.

He may have had two overcards, and with 8BB in the pot betting out i dont think is a bad play (Assuming he had overcards).

But having said that, I will play 89s,87s,T8s,86s from the CO with 4 callers ahead of me, and will call a single raise if one occurs after me.

This line of thinking is too cautious. The pot is big, you don't need to be so sure that you have the best hand in order to raise here.

Also, even if villain is reasonably passive, he could still bet a smaller pocket pair in this spot.

I expect the majority of players to check this flop with quads.

I generally don't raise 77 pre-flop, but since you have 4 in already, it's not bad for value.

Flop, raise it up. He could be donking with anything here like A or K. You probably won't protect your hand here because people will call with lots of hands trying to hit their card.
